Well , just a few more kind words about this course.

I went to the last one thinking I might pick up a few tidbits that I needed . Turns out I had forgotten more than I realised .

Cory went trough the basics to the far end of everything . His teaching style is second to none . It is very laid back and easy going . In fact , I don't know if hitting him with a 2 x 4 would ruffle his feathers much .

This makes re-learning a pleasure . It also brought back the fundimentals that were a bit rusty . Buy the end of the week , banging steel at 993 meters was a walk in the park , and the 1983 meters was doable second and third round hits.

When I got back from the course I worked on my basics more . Learning how to use the Field Firing Solutions program made first round hits almost 98% from 400 to 1200 yards . I also was able to use the information from him to help out a few shooters at the hide cup . They were battling bad calls and no dope . We started from scratch , and an hour later they were up to snuff with the guns .

So , long story short ...... THANKS CORY !!

Anyone thinking about going out to long ranges , look into the course his is doing at Gunsite in October . Well worth the time and money .

Sniper's Hide is returning to Gunsite with the XLR Course in October...

So if you want to have a great time and get the extra benefit of the class on the Field Firing Solutions, sign up for the October Class.

Thanks for the kind words sir, it's appreciated. Can't wait to get back at it. The new camera system is up and running, which will help with the calibration process. Don't forget we will be doing a 'pre-game show', if you will, Saturday before the class. We'll do a full day course on FFS, no extra charge. More fun than anybody should be allowed to have!

Guys, if any of you ever wanted to do an ELR class this one is worth it. Kevin M. and I did it a while back and I learned a lot from Cory - especially about using FFS to its potential, passive ranging and triangulation.

No only that, if you want to calibrate and dope your system out to distance, this is the course to do it. Two days spent shooting just to maximize the accuracy of your system on Unknown Distance Targets, which is all the 3rd day is... Nothing but UKDs from 1000 to 2000m.

Plus adding in the course on Field Firing Solutions, Cory takes you through the software step by step in extreme detail. Then matching your actual drop to the FFS program, you make sure to get every bit of accuracy out of it.

It builds confidence in your system like few course can... definitely worth it, this will be my 3rd trip in about a year and I am excited to do it.

I have generally shot about 200 rounds of 338, but could have shot more... I suppose 250 is about right.

I think for a 4 day setup if you bring 300 rounds you won't be short. It's a lot more about quality than quantity. Between the heat buildup and the recoil, it's better to shoot 5-8 rounds, then spot and run the computer for a bit, then get back on the gun after it's cooled down. If you shoot 2 or 3 shots on each of the UKD's, plus the nominal number of rounds on the calibration range, you'll be between 200-250 in the three day format, so another 50 rounds for the extra day should work out fine.

Don't hesitate to bring two guns, like a .338 and .375, we'll get them both dialed in.

Just call the office in the AM, 928 636 4565 and ask to register in the Sniper's Hide XLR class in October. Dave or Karen will set you up.

Bring your normal compliment of shooting gear. We form up teams for shooting, so bringing your spotting scope, binos, etc is just one way for us to make sure every team is well equipped. You'll get a document after registration sent to your email address with a full list.

250 is a good number. I shot 182 out of the cheytac . This time I'll have they Clclops and a 338 to play with . Might even bring the 300 if a wild bug hits me .
You can literaly shoot as much as you can handle with all of the shooting positions!

A range finder is a #1 pice of gear for it too !

Yes, the FFS class is a free add-on, come if you like, skip it if you have no interest. A lodging list is on the Web site and you get a copy in the registration docs.

Most guys use Trimble Nomads, but there are other PDAs out there that will run it to include HP iPAQs as long as they have an SD Card slot. You can find a host of iPAQs online pretty cheap.

Blasst I would recommend a bit more rifle, but Gunsite is at about 4000ft above sea level if you think you would be okay to shoot to 1500m with it, go for it. I would a magnum would be a better choice though.

The 6.5C is a bit light, about 30% of the targets will be outside the supersonic range. That said, I've had people run .330WM with hot handloads and be happy about being here. Even if you don't engage everything, the spotting and computer calibration work will prep you for anything you get in the future, plus you'll get the chance to see and shoot a number of rifles, which may or may not be a good thing, depending on your willpower/wallet balance.

That said, you should be good to 1200 because you will be at about 5500 feet of altitude and it will be hot. The trouble with the closer targets will be spotting your hits in the grass. Cory likes to hide targets using depth, shadow, and (in my best Monte Python imitation)... <span style="font-style: italic">Shrubbery</span>!

I ran it with a .300WM with 210VLDs at 2950fps: 3 first round hits; 3 second round hits; 3 misses out of nine shots. It was the lightest gun on the line but it held its own with the .338 250's out to about 1500.

Cory....what you said about shooting several other guns makes it even more appealing. I may pick up a FN or Savage in a heftier caliber for this. Sounds worth it.

Graham.....I was thinking of going a similar route at first. 300 wm or a wsm. Then came across some affordable 338's.

Not sure how my shoulder will like 300 wm or bigger. Haven't shot anything with more kick than a 12 gauge, 30-06, or 7mm mag......so I'll see I guess.

glad you agree. 1500-2000 yds is not a distance I have access to often. Here in Houston we have 1000 yd range....So don't want to dump a lot of cash in a gun that I won't use often.

I had Gale McMillan build me a 300 Winmag 24 years ago . Its around 14 pounds i think . Recoil not bad . Then I put a brake on it . Now it's a pussycat. 100 rounds in one sitting no problem .
I'll even bring it up for a second or third gun if someone needs to shoot it . It loves 190 smk's and 208 Amax around 2975.

I reasonable understanding of the basic long range concepts . Wind , mils , adjusting .

It's not a real basic class where you start from scratch.

The standard is PR7 or the equivelent as a prereq. If you don't know how to work as a team, read mils/moa, call wind or know basic markmanship fairly solid, this would not be a good place to start.

There is a PR7 class in September for those who need to get up to speed. That's a full 7 day class that runs you from basic zeros all the way to working as team ranging and calling shots to 1K after a stalk.

yep...I definitely need PR7. Doubt I can get away for 7 days in September though. I just fell in love with a DTA 338/308 package so there is a big sucking sound coming from my bank account. There should be a rehab facility for my disease.

Maybe I can find something nearer to Houston and a bit shorter to help get me up to speed on long range stuff.

The last XLR class and testing was a great week at Gunsite. For new folks the knowledge and instruction is solid and for shooters who have been involved in precision rifle, the way information is presented was a learning experience in itself. I shot 185 rounds and gave 20 away for another shooter to test out of his rig. As far as the Gunsite ranges and target packages, you will be busy all day.

You can borrow one, it is not an absolute.

Both Tom Olson and myself are talking about taking this class together. Neither of us have taken the pre-req class, but I feel that we both are probably up to speed. We both shoot quite regularly out to 1000 plus, and are pretty well versed with basic markmanship skills as well as basic long range skills. Neither of us read wind all that well.

Would we be good candidates for this class? I have taken all of the online training here and have put close to 10,000 rounds down range out to a max distance of 1,200 yards but never have been to a live class. Just wanted to make sure.

I would think you are fine, the first XLR Class I took had people in it that were probably well below that in experience and they learned a lot.

For the FFS portion of the class, can I use the Delta III version currently on my NOMAD? It's been working great for me and I don't want to get the $325 upgrade to Delta V if I don't need to.
