In all fairness, you could say something similar about just about any actor. "Oh look, it's anti-pimp James Franco playing a pimp" or "Oh look, it's reckless party girl Lindsay Lohan playing a nun."
I agree I would not discount it because of the actor...
I liked District 9, so it will be nice to see what the director does with a budget.

Indeed, the budget on this one is huge and knowing VFX artists who've been working on this film non-stop for the last 18 months and their unusual reaction to it is what mostly informed my "mind blown" comment.

It is sickening how many are like this. Mark Wahlberg, Sean Connery, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone. Its hard to watch a movie because I can't stand these asshats.

I guess it really depends on just how important it is to you. If I'm going to buy ammo components or rifle parts, I don't really care too much about the politics and beliefs of the guys making the parts. Over the years I've met some people who make parts I absolutely stand by as top quality, but interacting with them I quickly found out they fall into my "wow, you believe some crazy shit" category. Does that mean I refuse to buy from them? No, because I don't judge the quality of their products by their personal qualities, but I'm not going to go out of my way to hang out with them, that's for sure.
Actors are fucking actors - they play a role and for many of them they like to choose roles that challenge them or people's expectations of them. I'm going to take a wild guess here, but I doubt that Anthony Hopkins supports serial killing and cannibalism. And while some action stars may not share your fervent support of the 2A, should it really matter to us how their personal politics align with the roles they play? If so, Stephen Baldwin thanks you for your support. What about the grocer in your neighborhood? Does he have a lifetime NRA card? Or that smiling guy you bought your truck from? Do you preface your emails to EBay sellers with "if your politics do not align with mine, I won't buy from you"? If you're not going to apply this approach absolutely, then why are you cherrypicking on actors in a movie? And if you are prepared to be so absolutist about it, I think it's safe to say you're well on your way to living in a self-induced bubble.

I agree emphatically with Dogtown, and also might suggest that IMHO boycotts are best suited to masochists. They don't work, and they mostly hurt their practitioners. The targets usually seldom even notice; and if they do; they take it as a matter of warped pride.
I'm interested..when they're putting the stuff on Mat Damon reminded me of Quake 4. Visuals seem top notch, i loved district 9 so this should be worth seeing.

If so, How far are we away from 4k res? I know Sony just introduced two 4K TVs but i'm willing to bet there upwards of 10 grand. 1080p beyond 27" up close is well pixelated

Not to say movies don't still look good.We do 4K renders often but projection at 4K isn't really in demand outside of IMAX. 4K home theaters are kind of ridiculous in my opinion as I spend my mornings in dailies sessions at full HD and 2k all the time, from 50" BARCO displays, small projections to one of two theaters we have on site. Rarely if ever do I wish there was more resolution. Sure, things naturally progress towards higher resolution and fidelity, but just as "faster is better" isn't always true with precision shooting, the same goes for the audience experience. The 48fps screenings of "The Hobbit" weren't all that well received yet here was a film displaying more fidelity. Would 4k have made a difference? I don't think so.
I guess it more directly provides input to graphical fidelity in games rather than movies. Right now the only way to reach that kind of resolution is multi-monitor setups such as this, res is kinda of weak in the monitor segment and anything past 1920x1080 that's name brand cost out the ass. I guess that's where Catleap and crossover come in. I agree that 48fps wasn't necessary but i'm always one for improved visuals. I didn't see the hobbit in 3D though, i've never seen a 3D movie.

I like how clear and bright it is, it's not being camouflaged by darkness or editing, instead it just looks really nice crisp. The way everything looks in daylight really makes it stand out.

Wow, thats a pretty action packed trailer, hopefully that wasn't all of the action/best parts of the movie. It looks interesting for sure but I also get a very heavy district 9 themed vibe from it, I hope its just not a rehashed version of that film and that the director has more range in him than that.
Well, it's not surprising that Bloemkamp draws on his experience growing up in apartheid South Africa, but there are some rather universal themes as work here. And ultimately telling a good story is the foundation of a good, successful film like "District 9." And yes, the design work is also very similar to his previous films, which also shouldn't surprise us anymore than than the design similarities between Cameron's "Aliens" and "Avatar."

I see strains of District 9, and Niven's Ringworld saga.
All too believable, and maybe inevitable. That's not politics, it's just basic wholesale human nature.

I agree this looks great. I'm still kinda fuzzy on how turning Matt Damon into a cyborg and sticking doohickeys on an AK will bring about revolution though. Hopefully there's an interesting story to go with it.

Saw a commercial for it yesterday during the ball game. Looks well made at least. We'll check it out. The GF saw Jodie Foster and said "she's the bad guy? Great, I hate that bitch." lol
Well put. I have no interest in the movie as sci-fi just isn't my thing but appreciate your take on separating actors and their politics from the consumption of their product. I want 90-200 minutes of entertainment and I don't align with anyone 100%, so if someone in Hollywood has an agenda that doesn't fit with my beliefs, so be it.
I agree with you to a point. That point is reached when considering actors whose films are majority based on themes that are in conflict with their politics. Stallone and Schwarzenegger based their careers and made millions through the exploitation of firearms. They are hypocrites and deserve no respect or support. On the other hand, Hopkins has played many diverse roles, so I would not judge him too harshly if I found out he was a fanatical vegetarian.
That being said, I will probably watch the film. I enjoyed D9, but this looks a bit predictable.
Looks like it could be cool. But since I read the quote below I have a hard time not getting tweaked when I see Matt Damon as an action star. He's such a hypocritical pussy.

Saw this today, enjoyed it,
It was a tad slow, the story was solid and the effects were good and not the controlling factor of the flick. I think his subtle style is a welcome addition to all the Orange & Blue super sharpened, vivid movies we see. It's more film like in his approach, and less computer looking (although it is)

I just had a look at the new art book released for the film and it's awesome (if you're into that kind of stuff). The Workshop guys did all of the design work on D9 as well as Elysium...

Saw it today. It was OK, not bad but a matinee movie IMO. Very predictable and some slow areas. Not as great as I thought it was gonna be.
Ok, here is my rant. Just saw the movie today. Great VFx. And yes the director lives in the shadow of Apartheid, hence even in the year 2154 Latinos and Blacks are marginalized. It's a world where upper class whites rule in Earths Orbit. It's a little upsetting that this theme keeps getting pushed in our faces. Now instead of the politics of South Africa we are forced to be reminded of the politics of our border states. So thanks for that Neil! Would I say the film is great Sci Fi??? I personally preferred Oblivion as it fully removes us from our reality, where this movie (Elisium) just reminds us of the possibility of a distopian future. I want to go to the movies to be taken away from my reality, life is fucked up enough. But then again I admit, what was I expecting from that director and knowing already what I gleaned from the trailers?
Action packed..CHECK, good acting...CHECK, great visual effects...CHECK, good story...MEHHHHH. But I say go see it, it will get you thinking, and i'll bet you will dig the action sequences.
Copley does a great job in this film I will say. Don't expect District 9, only expect bigger and badder effects, yes more bone busting violence. Perhaps it will grow on me some day but today this film rubbed me the wrong way.
And yes, remnants of Rinworld, but only in its designs and not in it's politics. Ringworld is way more utopian and free of racial bias.
I did get to see the trailer for Enders Game, high hopes that should be tempered by the reminder that most movies that originate from a book do not transfer that easily, i.e. Dune.
Lastly... If you hate Hollywood actors and their choices in the roles they play WTF are you doing on the Snipers Hide Movie forum, LOL. Or maybe John Wayne in Rio Grande is getting too boring after watching him 20,000.00 times. Perhaps you and I suffer from the same syndrome? Where you are unable to forgive and actor of their politics I am unable to do so with a particular director. I'll bet that bends your tiny brain.

Saw this afternoon. Well executed pure science fiction. Speculative, socially conscious, entertaining. Far superior to anything else I've seen this summer.
I think he likes to post process all of his stuff and goes more desaturated with film grain over everything. These days you have to add that back in as the digital cameras don't have that. It's his signature look just like JJ Abrams loves to add lens flares over everything, like crazy.
I think it was apparent this was a veiled attempt at immigration issues(among others) as everyone on earth spoke spanish, even the poor whites in what was supposed to be Los Angles. Now that I am thinking about it, I'm wondering if Jody foster was meant to be a representation of Hillary and the bengazi debacle when she employed Kruger in the way that she did and then left him out to dry? That may be reading more into it than there is but at any rate, I think it is easy to see that this film does have some under
lying social commentary just as district 9 did.
Did anyone else catch the use of the voice on the med bed from the 5th element movie? There was one other sound bite i picked up on but don't recall it at the moment.

It's a real bummer to hear about the political/racial overtones. That is so completely unnecessary. I go to the movies to be entertained, not to soak up propaganda. And after Matt Damon's dumb gun quote, which makes it hard for me to separate the real person from the character I may have to take a pass on this one. Too bad, I loved District 9 and am a huge sci fi fan in general.

Is this from the same guy that took a bunch of stuff from Halo and got credit for it in District 9?
If I'm not mistaken this particular director (Neill Blomkamp) first directed District 9 which was based on a short film he did while studying Visual Effects at Vancuver Film School. Then after that he was asked to direct the Halo commercials and short film that was based on the Halo world. Not sure if he took anything in the way of design or story from the Halo video games, probably coincidental if there were any design elements.
So funny, but I don't really remember the voice from the med bay on 5th Element, I was lucky enough to work on the CG building extensions and flying CG cars on that film. So you would think I would remember it.
The "Restoration complete" sound bite came from the 5th element when they did the genetic reconstruction of Lee loo. The magic med bed in Elysium used the same sound bite and I believe some of the others used in 5th element.
I wonder if that was an homage to 5th? Good stuff Papa, I don't know anyone in Hollywood who could remember those lines.
And I think you might be reading into the Bengazi thing a little too hard, LOL. But Foster was great at playing a total conniving twat. So in that case I can see the connection to Hillary, haha. It's just way to easy to go back to politics with this one.
I'm guessing it is or is the popular thing among directors to do right now as they used the voice from the video game portal in the the movie Pacific rim for some sound bites as well.
