Embassy - Baghdad

Looks like the 870P and CS canister launchers are soldiering, er Marining, on 30 odd years later......

US soldiers keeping watch over the rioters on Tuesday after the embassy became surrounded following a furious post-funeral service demonstration for the Iran-backed militia members killed Sunday night

Don't forget to pull the FP fellas.....

They look kind of happy, guess a riot beats banging Peace Corps chicks.

I'm sure there is no "simple" answer...... Why are "Embassy's" needed in this day in time? I'm sure, long ago, they were a necessity due to slow / poor communications. Today we have Internet, communication satellites, conference communications, Fax Machines, etc.

Kinda the same reason we put boots on the ground; sometimes (most times) you really need to be there, in someone's face....

Embassies are as much for supporting Americans abroad as they are for diplomatic functions. Immigration doesn't accept faxed copies of passports when you get pickpocketed at a foreign train station.

My big concern is all the talk about Iran being behind it. I hope we have proof before putting foot-to-ass there opening a new front over there. If Iran is behind it and they probably are, make it a parking lot but only if the proof is there...

Smoke and prayers to ours in harm's way there.

Minor function of embassies, check their budget, ambassador and support staff, intelligence support all come before traditional support of citizens.
The staffs involved for those services are small, but the facility security and support budget for the diplomatic side may not indicate they are for citizen (and FN visa) services, but they still relate. As far as visitors to the typical embassy, the support services side exceeds diplomatic visitors.

I'm all for reducing overseas footprints and have lambasted DoS for many years for wasteful spending while I was a contractor, especially when it comes to embassy staffing and coddling of "staties", but I'm nowhere near calling for the closure of our embassies in lieu of digital diplomacy.

If Americans are abroad in the Middle East they don’t deserve support.

edit: In case you missed it as some dummies have, I am referencing the quote above and people traveling to shit holes just because. I am not speaking of our serviceman and diplomats.

Problem is, there are a lot of people over there that are normal and want to live like we do. It’s the government assholes that need to go down hard.

Do you really believe that’s what I was referring to?
You were pretty absolute in your comment, and it has a significant undertone that any American in the ME is undeserving of support as they are somehow disloyal to the US.

There's a slew of American expats working abroad, including in the ME. The auto, finance and energy industries alone have tens of thousands of American expats either visiting or semi-permanently working there, as well as many other projects in the security industry working with our allies to stem the Iranian growth of influence in the region right along with combatting Islamic extremism. American influence abroad comes in many other forms than our diplomatic or military presence.

...Really... that’s a pretty fucked up and ignorant thing to say.

Yes. Enlighten us, which Americans rate assistance from their government and which don’t? Does your blanket statement have some fine print that lists each ME country and which Americans in those countries rate the option of assistance?

If you are dumb enough to travel into a war zone and you aren’t a soldier or over there for diplomatic reasons then what happens to you should be of no concern to anyone here. Traveling to Africa would get the same response from me.

As to your second point, if you don’t have sense enough to know whAt I was referencing to then that’s on you. Your ignorance is not of my concern.
We bump heads every now again it seems. You are all over the place with your rational. At least I am consistent.

We do differ on some topics, and that’s fine. We all can have our own opinions. I’d like to think my message has always been the same. Call out ignorant shit when I see it. However Americans are Americans. Not every country in the Middle East is a war zone. Go spend some time in the ME and you’ll see that. Saying fuck you to Americans that need assistance is something I’ll consistently call out. ??

I will consistently say fuck you to anybody who travels from a 1st world country to a third world shithole regardless of their nationality. ?

I've never lost a passport in a foreign country. Is a replacement passport, issued by a US Embassy (In a foriegn country) accepted by "Immigration"?

And if more Americans actually DID THAT, the shit show that has become America would end pretty quickly... and attitudes like yours would not exist.

Once you see some of these 3rd world shit holes and how those people with absolutely NOTHING live and enjoy life, you become a hell of a lot more appreciative of what you have and how you live...

Not trying to start an argument but, Iraqis and heads on straight? When was the last time that was a thing.

Oh, I hear you, but that being said, they're not all bad. Give them a generation or two and they'll come up to speed...or not. Shrug...it's on them now. I've known a few Iraqi and Iranian Americans, and they were some sharp cookies, so there is hope.

Absolutely is, they cut a brand new passport book for you, typically pretty quick too if you have everything you need. It's very important to have access to an electronic copy of your IDs and passport in the event everything gets stolen from you, and always guard your wallet like it's a million dollars.

I renewed my own passport in Kabul, still using it. Regular renewals take longer than emergency replacements, but still typically within 10-15 business days.

The likes of Riyadh, Dubai and Abu Dhabi makes our own major cities look like third world shit holes, especially trash riddled cities like Portland, Memphis and New Orleans, and Chicago and L.A. are utter embarrassments in comparison.

No difference in validity between a passport issued by the US Embassy either as a new one or a replacement and one you get while here.
Now that being said, you might have some significant questions if it's a "lost" passport and they are suspicious about the circumstances of it's "loss".

Back in the day the US embassy in HK was really good about fast turn around time if there was no "questions" about it and it was a simple expired or filled up with stamps issue (or you wanted one that didn't have a little tiny black coded stamp on one of the pages that some pissy embassy official from another country, put there while stamping your visa... because you know you didn't give them the correct respect and they decided a little "border surprise party" would teach you HA!) As I recall they had mine done in about an hour.

LOL! Just when you think someone couldn't say some dumber shit... smdh...Why do some people think speaking in broad absolutes, somehow makes them seem tougher online? Ha!
I think what you just posted was dumb as shit. Go to Afghanistan and get your head chopped off by isis because you wanted to experience the middle east for your two week vacation, yes there would be no fucks given by me. That doesn’t seem stupid to me. Seems about right.

And go outside of that and see what you get. It would be what is deserved at that point.

Now you are acting like a snowflake. It was a random country and a random example. I take this comment about like I took you questioning my first one to reflect on our servicemen. Absurd
Once again, I’m just remaining consistent by calling out stupidity. Dude it’s ok. Enjoy your bubble.

That was just a couple examples, and outside of any of them you find small towns full of people who actually clean up their trash, farmers who don't keep decades old equipment littering their fields, and the scattering of dilapidated homes one sees traveling across the US is nonexistent there.

I've traveled the ME, North Africa, and South Asia thoroughly for my previous work and while there's certainly some real bad places, Yemen, Iraq and Syria as the most notable where any unsponsored travel is highly discouraged, the majority is not the goat fucking/wiping their ass with the hand places which those who have never traveled outside their country's borders would think them to be. Seems last time war found its way inside our border, it took a decade of reconstruction to come out of our own shit hole status. Poverty is poverty, but our poor are somehow living far filthier than theirs while having 100 times the income.

I felt safer going into a roadside shop thirty miles outside Riyadh unarmed, than I did going to a BBQ joint in Memphis down the road from Graceland with my G19 on my hip, and was greeted with greater hospitality as well. I did smile, greet the shop keeper respectfully, buy some goods and left with a hand shake, so I guess I really did get what I deserved in a way...
