Should I consider the T3x Lite Compact? It seems like a great price compared to some of their other options, but I'm not sure if the "lite" barrel ought to be a show stopper?I would go the tikka route all day long.
You don’t want a really light barrel unless you’re making a hunting rifle. You could also get a tikka action and a pre-fit which I’ve done a few times. The actions can be hard to come by but you can usually get out the door with a good barrel for around $$900-$1k.Should I consider the T3x Lite Compact? But at that point does it make more sense to go with the "custom" options suggested earlier in the thread? You don’t want a really light barrel unless you’re making a hunting rifle. No it isn't. The plastic shroud went away with the T3X introduction years ago.Bolt shroud is plastic
I didn’t read the whole thread but custom is a buzzword. Some people would say it makes more sense some say would it doesn’t. IMO the Tikka is the nicest action you can get for the money and stepping up to a $1000 action doesn’t get you a whole lot(if anything) that the tikka wouldn’t give you.But at that point does it make more sense to go with the "custom" options suggested earlier in the thread?
1 and 3 are your options.I'm a long time handgun shooter trying to get into shooting precision rifles on a budget. I'd like to put something together to start working on fundamentals in a higher caliber than my current .22 (I own a Savage FV SR .22 in a Boyds Pro Varmint that I've been using to get started in shooting rifles). I think I'd like to go .308 and have been looking at a few options. Ideal budget for the action, barrel, stock/chassis and scope is ~$1500 total. I can upgrade some things later.
My local range currently only goes out to 100yards but is expanding in the next year or so to go out to 400, or perhaps a little more.
OPTION 1: Tikka T3x lite compact (~$700) put into a KRG X-Ray chassis (~$550). Scope TBD...
- Downside: this doesn't have a "heavy" barrel. Is that much of an issue?
OPTION 2: Savage 110 Magpul Hunter (~$900). Scope TBD
- This is an "easy button" option, but I'm not sure how much fall off there is in terms of quality & accuracy from the Tikka to the Savage 110?
OPTION 3: Howa 1500 barreled action (~$450) in a KRG X-Ray chassis (~$550) or Magpul Hunter (~$250).
OPTION 5: Remington 700 Magpul Hunter factory build (~$1k). Scope TBD.
Any thoughts on the relative merits of these options? I don't really want to get into major gunsmithing and I'm hoping getting the action/barrel into a chassis is doable for a novice. I also have lots more research to do on optics (Vortex options vs. Leupold, etc. for my application).
Suggestions?
People that try to find a reason to bash the Tikka love to bring up the old style plastic bolt shroud that i'm not sure they use any longer that can be replaced for 40 and will not cause a issue if it busted in the first place. The Tikka has plastic parts?
I'm so glad I got this advice a few years ago. My $300 savage 11vt in 308 in a mcree percision (from before they were on the naughty list) with a dmr II-i is a beast. Not as smooth as the Bergara but 2000+ rounds later it is sub moa all day long and I don't have to worry about beating it up.To be honest I would keep saving and buy things as you can. Don’t cheap out on a scope. I would go cheaper on the rifle before cheaper on the scope.
I wanted to be low budget on my last build. Then I found a KRG whiskey. It went all out the window at that point.
Looks like a damn nice rifle. What happens when you shoot the barrel out? Is it the same thread pitch as the Tikka or some other common thread pitch? Just something to check into. I see they are on Clearance at cabelas. Very trg like. Sako used to make a rifle very similar in a laminated wood stock. They were very good rifles.Ok, I know I’m moving beyond my original price range, but what do folks think of a Sako S20 precision as an alternative option to the others? Is the action/barrel a significant step up from the Tikka?
Sako is the "Luxury" Tikka (IIRC Sako makes Tikkas). I don't know if its a significant step up (that's a loaded words--Sakos are NICE)--I think more bang for you buck would be save that money and invest in glass.Ok, I know I’m moving beyond my original price range, but what do folks think of a Sako S20 precision as an alternative option to the others? The only one I own of those is a howa hcr in .308. I have the viper pst Gen 2 5×25×50 and a harris bipod. All that totaled right around 2300. Add in an EGW scope base, seekins scope rings and your up to 2700. Guess what I'm saying is if you can't afford that much up front, do it piecemeal. Buy once cry once. Don't buy a 250$ optic you're gonna swap out in 6 months. You really can't go wrong with any of your options. I will say I'm an average shooter and I'm getting sub moa groups at 100 yards with my setup. Don't skimp on the ammo either. Same here. It's really solid. I couldn't be happier with mine. A super company as well. Their customer service is second to noneI think vortex pst’s are a good deal for what your getting. I have a 5-25 model on one of my guns and it does a good job.
