Rifle Scopes Eotech advice

Re: Eotech advice

I agree with lazy21, get an Aimpoint. I have three Eotechs, all of which seem to suffer from a particular issue. Looking past the fact that they are heavy and large (AA 512 versions), they seem to just not be built that tough. If you put that thing in a safe, which is not humid or anything strange, with batteries, that thing will drain the batteries while corroding the device itself. Then you pull out your rifle, and it doesn't work. They are offering kits to fix the issues, but come on. I had one on my SHTF rifle, and I pulled it out and it was DEAD. Put new batteries in it, still dead. All the leads and stuff fell out of the cover, thing was all messed up.

Go with Aimpoint T1 Micro, I got one and I love it. That is what lives on my SHTF rifle now.

Re: Eotech advice

I have an EoTech 512 and love it...it sits in a bag in the trunk of my patrol car on a 6940 and gets banged around for 10 hours each shift. Every time I pull it out, it fires right up and lets me run the gun pretty hard. Maybe I got lucky and got a good one? I don't know, but I'm happy with it. My advice to the OP is to try both out and see which one you prefer. I've pulled my AR out on duty quite a few times and never once worried about the EoTech giving me trouble. I run the lithium AA batteries, maybe that has something to do with it.

Re: Eotech advice

Get the Eotech. You won't regret it for close-quarter. Most don't know how to use the sight properly so they see no advantage. Or, theyre cross-eye dominant and cant get used to it. It actually has a HUGE advantage in that you keep both eyes open and scanning at all times. Your situational awareness is enhanced because you are basically just looking through a window with your dominant eye and keeping your peripheral vision with the other eye. Mine have all been 512's because I'll never use night-vision with it and the 512 uses common AA batteries. FWIW...

Re: Eotech advice

I love EoTech. I've got 3 of them. Used them on deployments in A'stan and they never failed me. For CQB I don't think they can be beat. The big circle around the dot on the EoTech is awesome for getting quick shots off in CQB. The Aimpoints, at least as far as I know, only have the little dot.

^^^^^THIS

I found the Eotech's fatal flaw is exactly this. It uses regular batteries, and they will corrode inside it and break it. Same thing happened to me. Called up Eotech, they knew exactly what the problem was, and offered to fix it for $$.. I said forget it and switch to aimpoints.

The other "minor" thing is the battery life... it sucks compared to the aimpoint...last couple training classes I went to, peoples EoTech batteries were dying left and right... no one with an aimpoint went down.

If you are on top of things, and constantly change out batteries, go for it... if you want to be able to put it in a safe/trunk/wherever and forget about it, then it just work, go for the aimpoint.

Re: Eotech advice

I have the latest from both companys and Untill EOTECH steps up to the T-1 battery Life they will be second Fiddle.

I like The eotech with NV alot so I deal with the Battery life and the past Zero shifts and turning off from hard hits seem to be gone with the current model. exps3-2

Eotech have improved in performance and features and they keep geting better.

Re: Eotech advice

I don't think the EoTech is either big or heavy. I run lithium AA batteries and haven't had issues with battery life. I've left it on in my carrying case and it turns itself off after 7 hours and fires back up when it's time to go to work. I like being able to keep both eyes open (which I can't with an Aimpoint) and also not having my field of view limited. I know some people aren't affected by the Aimpoint like I am, I guess they're just not for me.

Re: Eotech advice

As far as I know the Eotechs with the corrosion and battery problems are the models that take AA batteries. Lithium are the only way to go on these models. It is a known fact that alkline batteries corroded internaly when they are discharged, then the corrosion leaks out this has to do with the chemical process in the battery. So the fact that it corroded shouldn't be the main concern, the concern is what caused the battery to drain to basicly nothing? Does the Eotech draw current from the battery all the time? There are smaller and lighter Eotechs and the batteries they take are all lithium I believe, Also believe they have better battery life. So do these other models drain the batteries down? Guess I'll go check mine now.

Re: Eotech advice

Well I am not sure if this will help or not I have a XPS on my duty rifle one of my buddies runs a Eotech on his set up but his uses the double AA batreries, mine does not. His went down a few months ago due to a battery corosion issue. He called Eotech they sent him replacement parts told him to run only lithium type batteries. I have had no issues with mine and its atleast 2-3 years old. Both rifles get carried either in the mounts in our assigned cars or they are in the trunk in a case.

Re: Eotech advice

I have three of them and they sit on everything from a 7" SBR in 556 to a .308 LR-308. I do like the XPS-2 versions for a little weight savings but I've never had an issue with them. For me, the 65MOA circle helps identify targets a little more quickly than the single dot. The Aimpoint CCO sits on all our duty weapons...it's a fine optic...but I like the reticle and readily available battery options of the eotech.
