I bought a 5-25, with H59, in early 2019. When it came in I mounted it on a mule stock to compare it to other scopes I had that were mounted. First I compared it to a SWFA 5-20x50HD. I have three of these and the Vudu compared favorably in terms of IQ and the various controls were easier to use. I then compared it to a S&B PMII 5-25X56. The most notable difference in the three was the PMII was like a widescreen TV. If you look at my comments you will see that I don't use normal terms like field of view, depth of field, low light performance, etc. There are guys on here are adepts when it comes to optics. There knowledge and their patience vastly exceed mine. Do not think that I don't appreciate what they do for us. I read everything they post.n the rail
When I do these comparisons between scopes, what I'm looking for is how easy they are to use. I pick targets from 200-1200yds. I look into deep shadows and look for clearly defined lines. I look at fence posts or pasture gates that have clearly defined verticals and horizontals. At long distances I look at high branches on conifers with clusters of needles or bare limbs. I go back and forth between distances and pretty soon I know how much I have to adjust my eye relief, how easy they seem to dial, how forgiving the parallax is, etc., etc. When I got a PMII I learned another lesson. My sketchy assessment method could give me a baseline but the only way I would know was to put it on a rifle and shoot it. Once I got two or three hundred rounds under the PMII, I got it. It made it easier for me tot get the best out of myself (the weak link), my rifle, and my ammo. Less eye fatigue, less meddling with adjustments, less getting on and off the rifle, more just getting on the target and getting a good release. It took me two or three hundred rounds to come to the realization that the scope was just there and in general it was just waiting for me to get on target and pull the trigger. Thus came the I get it.
Now back to the Vudu. A couple of months ago I put it on an Armalite 15 target/varmint gun. I used 1.5" Burris XTR Signature Rings. These are a six screw screw ring and has the Burris insertable liners that allow you to adjust elevation ( horizontal as well if needed). I used inserts that would give me 25 MOA off of the 0MOA rail. After a few rounds at fifty and the same at one hundred I had 25Mils up and 7 down from my zero. Note there is not much real estate on the tube. A narrower ring would allow more adjustment. Between a Magpul PRS Gen1 and the placement of the scope on the rail, I was able to get LOP and eye relief that worked for me. I have about eighty rounds downrange and every time I use the scope I like it better. To sight it in I used Remington white box (crap box) 55grn. FMJ. Then I fired three or four three round grps. I was amazed at the performance. Sufficiently amazed that I'm going to find a load that works for it with the 53grn. V-Max. I can't comment on long term reliability-obviously. I have not done a test to verify accuracy of the elevation dialing. I'll do that this week if I get enough work done. Here are my initial observations.
Things I like
Well packaged and comes with bikini caps, throw lever and sunshade
I like the locking elevation turret and the covered windage, 10mils per turn on elev., very tactile on both
Excellent rev counter
Very easy to set zero stop
The H-59, I'm okay with it, it is my first tree reticle, I thought it would be too busy, it doesn't bother me
Under 30ozs.
Short
Illum is not daylight bright, it's plenty bright at dusk, controls are easy to use, I'm OK with it
Lots of elevation
Don't like
Not much that isn't nit picky
Complete ocular turns with power adjustment, I have no love for flip caps, others will not feel the same
Image quality is good but that's about it, it doesn't limit my use but if it bothers a user you can step up to S&B SS or ZCO but only with a significant cost increase
Has some color fringing, if I look for it I see it at close ranges, not so at longer ranges, I know it makes some people nuts
Best uses are any AR application that can use the power range, light weight hunter, DMR, walking varminter, etc.
Value is a hard nut to crack. The best buy recently has been at DVOR with the H-59. The price is about $1750. I have not called dealers looking for a "best deal".
