Episode 143 House Cleaning : Clarifying Modifications/ Accommodations

I’m here to clarify the modifications/ Accommodations that were made for me throughout the NRL Rifles Only Brawl Match. I placed 3rd out of 110 shooters.

Stage 1 : Rooftop Heaven. 15 rounds. Square plate at 478y

1 bag and Sling. 2mins. Shooter will move through 3 different roof tops and engage the target 5x per rooftop.

• I shot it from 1 rooftop. I did reset after every 5 rounds. Mag out and what not. Went 12/15.
• Next time, I can shoot it off all 3 BUT, they’ll either have to give me EXTRA time or stop and start the clock as I’m transition cause I had to have my buddy @hic28 be my back stop, keeping me from falling off…

Stage 3 : Under the Table. 8 rounds. 350ish yards. Sling and bag. 2mins. Shooter will engage target with 2 rounds from each brace under the table. 4 braces.

• I shot all 8 rounds from 1 brace cause I would’ve timed out, on top of the other braces, I was too short to get a good sight picture and being cramped up from the braces being too close.
• A lot of people cleaned it. I got 6/8

Stage 5 : Contain Yourself. 8 rounds. 286y. 1 bag. 90secs. Shooter will drop prone left shoulder 2 rounds, get on barricade and same thing 2 rounds left shoulder, right shoulder 2 rounds, and end in prone right shoulder 2 rounds. all of a container. Must take mag out, bolt back after every transition.

• I shot it off weightlifting plates cause I wouldn’t have been able to have any maneuverability if I got my chair up there. And I would’ve timed out.
• I shot the CoF correctly except off of plates instead of a barricade. Barely made it and cleaned it like a lot of shooters did.

Stage 6 : Be Happy. 10 rounds. no bags. only bipod. 1min. 67y. 1” dot on paper. Shoot off barrels. Hole must be 75% in 1” dot.

• I shot it off the short barrel, cause yeah, I’m not tall.. 7/10

Stage 7 : Positional. 15 rounds. 100y. 44% IPSC. 90secs. Sling supported. Seated or kneeling.

• Most shot it from seated and use their knees/ legs to support their elbows. I have none thus why I shot it sling supported in prone. My rifle was not touching the ground.
• Went 14/15. A lot of people got high hit percentages. One dude cleaned it in under 40secs.

Stage 12 : Freaking Culverts. 10 rounds. 296y. Bag and sling. 90 seconds. Shooter will move through 3 culverts, 1st one will be shot from left shoulder, middle will be either shoulder, right culvert from right shoulder. Mag out bolt back each between transitions.

• I could’ve shot it off of one culvert, but decided to shoot it off all 3. RO and I came into agreement that he was going to let me finish the stage, but I just had to be moving (don’t take my sweet ass time).
• Cleaned it. I was only 15secs over normal time.

Stage 13 : Air Dingo. 20 rounds. 400+ yards. 2mins. Bag and Sling. Shooter will enter help and engage target from rope with 10 rounds, then shoot 10 rounds from prone.

• I started from inside the helo (they bitched about this too lol), I told George Gardner that I was going to time out, so he let me finish it like the paralyzed guy before me. Everyone was shooting off the rope from seating or kneeling, but they where using their legs to support they’re elbow/s. Like I did 2yrs ago, I borrowed my buddy @hic28 knee to get support. I don’t have knees so I used someone else’s.
• The funny thing about this stage is, I cleaned it, but the other RO only gave me 16points when I timed out. They supposedly had it fixed, but after final scores came out, only showed 16points. Those extra 4 points would’ve put me in 2nd place. But I brushed it off.

I’m not complaining about other competitors when they get to use their knees/ legs as arm support and what not. I have to work with what’s left of me. Which is only 3 fingers that are untouched basically on right hand. 4 on left hand that are gone, thumb being useless with how they attached it. Right thumb being 75% gone, and finger tip off my middle finger gone as well. And of course, double above the knee amputee, with one being close to the hip.

I run the gear that I want to run which I have been loyal to those brands for over 5yrs now and am not looking to 'upgrade', and am not looking for sponsorships. So It’s not like I am trying to take sponsorship deals by placing higher. Maybe, they just need to shoot better, instead of blaming the crippled.

I am sure the dude that got caught talking about me and the match wasn’t the only guy who did so. It would’ve been a funny shit show had my 4points counted from the Helo stage and me beating said individual.

You’re sponsored by big companies as well as being a top 5 competitor at every match you go to. How about being a better representative for the companies that support you, and be a good sport instead of blaming everyone else when things aren’t going your way.

Again, just here to clarify and move on and enjoy my finish. Apologies were made, I accepted it. More important things in life than to worry about what negative things are being said about me at matches.... again. I’m postitive he wasn’t the only one. And this isn’t the first time at a match it has happened to me. Something as little as driving from stage to stage, people will complain......

Holy shit! That's fucking unreal. Some people just amaze me to no end. For someone to be a little bitch about minor accommodations being made for you is - well there aren't words to even describe that.

I guess the goal to get a jersey these days is to just play "mister superiority complex".

Good God some people... Fuck. Great sportmanship there on the other side. Color me fucking unimpressed. You deserve any "accommodation" you choose to ask for in my opinion.

They show their true colors in an unprompted and an unsportsmanlike fashion.

None of these matches are "fair" the stages are not designed to be universal so accommodations have to be made, unfortunately, most of the time they are not made, you have to ask. There will always be biases for people who don't fit the mold, so the idea that some people will take it upon themselves to "Monitor" the shooter is silly. They only monitor those who threaten their personal placement. It's another BS talking point for them to defend their position. My suggestion, mind your own damn business and most of this drama will disappear.

This is not the first time we heard complaining about Jorge (NoLegs), some have even had the gall to complain about the use of a 4 Wheeler to move from stage to stage. To that I say, Serge, stop being so lazy and push the damn chair faster.

This is a game, nothing more, and in fact even less because it's not a game designed to be played the same way by all the competitors. Each competitor will have a slightly different take on the stage, so it's game played in a fluid way. Oh, he only does well because" he gets to shoot the stage in a different way" says the same people who will game a stage and call it innovation.

Jacob said this best in his interview with me, We all know the Match Director's intent when it comes to a stage. The fact they let you "game it", is a failing and not a feature.

We all talk about being inclusive and yet when presented with opportunities to demonstrate this, they fall flat on their face time and time again. There is the real clue in all this, the guys that want to make a business out of it. Of course, that business only works if they move certain elements of the game out of their way. Don't pay any attention to that, just move along and bask in their glow.

it's more about what you do when nobody is looking vs the public persona you display to hide the facts of your their true nature. It's more about them than it is about growing the sport. How many times do they have to say it out loud, you're in their way.

Sad state of affairs when a chill and laid back event gets spoiled by attitude and the air of self-entitlement.

If you have to stoop to the level of complaining about "accommodations" made for the guy with no legs and half his fingers in order keep your self entitled shooting complex riding high then you have more problems than almost getting beat by the guy with no legs and half his fingers....you have some real mental health issues!!

To the sponsors of said self entitled shooter.....you need to demand more respect, honor and sportsmanship out of your sponsored shooters.
This type of situation can and will only push people away from your products.
Sponsorship is a 2 way street (Not just you providing to the shooter, but the shooter needs to uphold your company standards, ethics and philosophies) and there is no way that having a sponsored shooter complain about handicap accommodations is driving your products in the correct lane.

Let's just say, I accepted the guys apology. I'm not here to tarnish him or anyone. Just want people to take a good look at themselves in the mirror.

The toughest times of my life where spent as an inpatient in Bethesda, MD and Palo Alto, CA. The countless surgeries I had to go through, pain I had to go through and still going through day to day living, I don't like that to mention because I am still fortunate to wake up everymornig and see my family, when there were others that weren't so lucky, or some that didn't want to live with the pain anymore... and yes, I was conscious after stepping on an IED, even so when life was slipping away from me.... I am still here though LOL

I can care less about holding a grudge as I barely shoot 5-6 2Day matches a year. This is a hobby at best, even less with big matches. I run a club with @hic28 and @MarinePMI down here in San Diego, CA. I am here acting as an enabler to this community. If I show them that I myself goes out there and shoot matches besides club stuff, they'll come out too. As well as bring quality Instructors to come out and teach, to save the club match shooter from spending more on travel fees to go elsewhere. And I am Co-MD an NRL Match at the end of the year. 1st one in SoCal. Just wanting to actually help grow this 'sport'.

I was at this match. I shot it. I placed 19th on 1.5 lungs and 1 fully functional eye ( I had massive allergies attack that has been now dubbed the Ryan Hey Strain). I am a combat veteran that is lucky to be here and with all of my limbs. Shooting rifle matches is a stress release and a way to relax. I come to matches to have fun and hang out with like-minded people and also be representative of not only the place of employment but many other companies that have taken time to support me, and compete in this game. GAME. For 95% of the competitors, this game is not tied to their work or their paycheck. Mine indirectly and sometimes directly is.
Imagine if a company rep or an employee of a company complained about a double amputee veteran and it got back to their boss. Imagine if a fully sponsored shooter were to suddenly lose all or some of their sponsorships because they were bitching about a double Amputee combat veteran at a Precision Rifle match.

I kept my opinions pretty much quiet on this because it is in my backyard of Texas. Not now. If anyone has an issue with a combat veteran who lost two legs getting some accommodations in a match, go fuck yourself. If you are here in Texas, do not come and talk to me if you bitched about this. In fact, stay away from me. It is truly best that I don't know the exact people that bitched. This is a sport/game. Jorge had the nutsack to enlist and go over and do great things to bad people. Many of us did. And now he is partaking in a sport with a few spineless fucksticks that whine about getting beat. Guess what; shoot better and suck less.

I'll end this on positive notes. I am happy that Jorge did so well and I hope that his match at the end of the year is a success. I also had a great time at Rifles Only, seeing old friends and meeting some new ones as well. it was great seeing more of the PNW/West Coast come east to Texas. Very rarely do we get the amount of crossover from the PRS and NRL centric shooters like it was at the Brawl. I look forward to the Silent Match and Heatstroke. Hopefully, no amputees show up, shot good, and bash fragile fucking egos.

Keep up the amazing shooting, anyone that says you're getting a leg up on the competition because of your "accommodations" should be ashamed, I consider him a much lesser man and an inferior competitor and I hope the reputation follows him throughout his days in competition as "that guy"!

Imagine if the handicapped shooter was someone other than Mr. Ortiz (Whom seems to have a great support system that includes @hic28 and @MarinePMI) that was participating in their first precision rifle match and this is what they had to deal with?

So much for the new guy feeling like they still have a place in the community huh??
So much for the new guy feeling like they have a segment of society than not only respects what they had to overcome to get to the match but respects them for not dwelling on their handicap that we see eat a lot of injured vets up internally.

And now, all MD's are in the know, are are going to accommodate those with a handicap (ol' Farts too) and very short fucking people like @Lowlight and my buddy Nathan at 'Short' Action Precision .
They are working hard so that this shit doesn't happen again. And if it does, it won't be pretty for that competitor. I can truly appreciate the direction in where the NRL is heading, especially being on the Board and seeing it inner works of things.

Sounds like an interesting new stage. Everyone gets an ankle tied to thier belt and then shoots a stage one legged. It might humble a some shooters to experience 1/10th the work Nolegs has to go through.

I am not sure it should be made to be about the shooter, as Jorge noted it was settled on his end.

However, the mindset needs to change. There is one school of thought that says publicly shame the guy, but I am more about the wider problem, not the individual attack lines.

Sure the "who" is important because it sets the tone, but this not a new thing and is part of a larger issue oozing over from the top down. It has to be bigger than the person. Names change all the time, the attitudes carry forward. Monkey see monkey do.

As has been suggested, set the example as an ambassador of the sport and not just when the camera is on, all the time. This is the trend I have been seeing, Accomplished shooter has a bunch of super fans, his small circle of friends who start the ball rolling in the wrong direction. Rather than set them straight, He laughs along with them. They grow bolder and bolder and soon it's nothing more than a running joke only they think is funny. It spills off the Internet from the FB groups to the real world and very quickly nobody realizes they aren't online anonymous anymore but playing the same games in public. Stand up, set the example and realize your jokes are not funny, but stupid.

If we (Royal we) wanted to call a person out by name, we can, instead, how about fixing the issue before it jumps to the next group of friends and acquaintances. Set the tone, people are watching and look up you.

The first few months of the well known PRS guys making asses out of themselves were somewhat amusing. Maybe it's the topic or fatigue but this incident is just disappointing. Historically gun culture has been very appreciate of the military and the sacrifices of veterans. It makes me sad when that attitude isn't mirrored by some top shooters. I plan to for sure. Already signed up for ROing the 2019 DVPC. Having a Tikka T3 done up with a Proof Research in 6 Creedmoor. It’s topped with a Leupold MK5. I got the Mk5 from a Hide member for a killer deal. Community’s been good to me. So I’m going to do it. I just can’t believe there’s people in this sport bitching about “accommodations” for us missing limbs. But like you said it doesn’t make up the majority. ??

I was not bitching. In fact I was one of the first to go congratulate Jorge and shake his hand for shooting well all weekend. I’m sure he can attest to that. The guy is a straight shot for sure.

I was brought information about what was going on. I should have brought all info to the MD or directed those people to talk with the match staff. It wasn’t my place to play match police or match rule interpreter. I handled that poorly. And have apologized for such actions. Won’t happen again. If I am there to shoot, that’s what I will do, if I am there to MD, I’ll do that. I was mostly on the opposite side of the range assisting another shooter who had zero leg ability. We carried him up towers, helped get him into position etc etc. just glad he came out to shoot. Pretty incredible!

Jorge is going to slay it this year. He is working hard and it shows. You are off to a great start. Keep up the good work dude, excited to see you on the line very soon.
