Rifle Scopes Equivalent to Old Loopy LR M3?

When I bought (and later sold) my SCLE it had a Leupold VariX III LR M3 scope. I LOVED that scope and was really bummed when they discontinued it. Why did they anyway? Was it cutting into their Mk4 sales?

Anyway, provided I get a precision rifle again soon, what would be a suitable replacement that won't break the bank?

That said, had one myself but with advances and many companies like Vortex, Bushnell and SWFA giving scopes with better features in the same price range there are reasons to look around before buying if you aren't set on the Leupold.

This.

Fall in love all over again (and for less money too).

Wow. Things sure have changed in a relatively short time. When did Bushnell start making good scopes?! (not that I'm complaining). Anyway, so y'all think that a Bushnell Elite 4200 (the one on sale at Midway for $549), or a Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10, or even a SS scope would be comparable in quality to the old VariX M3? I'm trying to keep my scope budget around $500.

Some of them may be saying that. I believe lots of them are saying that the newer scopes will be on par and/or better than the CURRENT Mark 4 scope (new name), that you're looking at buying. Leupold ain't what it used to be, and technology has brought prices down on lots of things. My Vortex Viper PST mil/mil FFP is a heck of a scope for the money.

Re: Equivalent to Old Loopy LR M3?

IF you shop around you could probably find a used M3 for <700. Otherwise there are a couple people with bushnell 3-12 FFP scopes in the classifieds on this site work out a deal with one of them. If you like fixed 10X a super sniper HD would be worth it, I see them used for 600-650.

I have a 3-12 FFP and it works fine.

Re: Equivalent to Old Loopy LR M3?

Rich S, I also started off with the m3 and love the scopes for fast BDC use which most of the above obtions do not have, but I also have used most of the above options and there are many better new cost options as listed above. I would try to get to a close by class or competion and look through other peoples stuff and see what you like. I will warn you that is what I did and have mostly used a SB 5X25 since...I do still have a m3 and love it on basic 700 rifle it is very good set up and you can get good deal on used one

Well, it looks like my optic budget has increased to $1K. What would be some of my best choices in this price range? Keep in mind I currently don't have access to over 300 yards, but I plan on sometime stretching it's legs (perhaps at Quantico).
