Wondered how good ER Shaw barrels were. What kind of accuracy has been gotten out of them. Notice that they only do 1 in 8,10 or 12 twist in a 308 Cal. Will the 1 in 8 work for 208 to 240 grainers or is there gonna be some problems with the twist????

My barrel from Shaw is a .264 win mag not .308 but it is "SWEET".Now I must also clarify that it's on a hunting gun.It will shoot well under 1/2 inch groups at 100yds which is good enough for hunting standards. On a bench rest rifle I'm not sure?? Personally I am probably not any better than what it shoots anyway..For the price I couldn't have gone wrong and actually have another one on order now..

My dad has built several with ER Shaw barrels. For hunting use,
I think they are fine. I really don't want to spend the money to have a barrel chambered and installed on an action and hope it
shoots bug holes for any competition or tactical rifle. I'll spend a little more. Several of the hunting rigs shot fantastic
when they were finished. I'm just saying that if you are building a precision rifle, spend a little more and get a barrel
that you have no doubts with.

What is your intended use?

Re: ER Shaw Barrels- How good are they????

Just took my 300 wm out this weekend. It's awsome for the price. 5 shots will fit under a quarter at 100 yards. Mine likes siera 190 matchkings with the book accuracy load set .010 of the lands. It's a 1.125 all the way 1/10 twist. I had the action trued , lugs laped and recoil lug installed by them. Dont know how it will do at longer ranges have not had a chance to take it out futher yet. But for the money i am very pleased. I know its not one of the big name barrel companys but im happy with it. Sure it would be even better with some else behind the trigger that knows how to shoot better than me i am ok but doing my best to improve

Turk.
Just curious; what are you gonna do w/ 200+ grain in a 308?

I shoot 220's in my .308 for knocking pigs over with a bit mor authority, Hornady round nose. they are accurate and work well.

Also subsonic .308's shoot 200gr+ bullets nicely.

Re: ER Shaw Barrels- How good are they????

if your putting the money into having the rifle rebarreled spend the extra and get a better barrel. Had a guy that brought in one to have a set of sights mounted. Out of curriosity I looked at it with a borescope, and It resembled one of those no clog files from brownells. Just chatter marks from one end to the other. There is a reason the sight for them says or at least did say "produces hunting accuracy". If you get one make sure it's a beefy one so you can use it as a jack handle later.

I have one on a Model 1 Sales AR15 Varmint upper. Fouls like a factory Remington bbl, but it shoots well that way. When its done, Ill replace it with a PacNor.

Re: ER Shaw Barrels- How good are they????

These are the first three shots out of my ER Shaw..Again it's on a hunting gun in .264 win mag and I'm no benchrest guy by any stretch..And all the work was done by me.This is a good start to "minute of hunting gun" for me..

Re: ER Shaw Barrels- How good are they????

I have a buddy who uses them and is satisfied, gets 1/2 to 3/4moa performance out of them. I have given him a bad time about it but he claims the proficiency obtained by spending the extra money on components makes up for the 1/8moa you might be giving up to a big name barrel installed by a big name smith. I have to admit I have not seen him miss anything in the field that could be attributed to slightly less accuracy from the barrel or the install...

Also he uses the normal install, I think it was under $100.

Re: ER Shaw Barrels- How good are they????

A couple of years ago, I had them do an install on a Mark X action. They did the chambering and squaring of the action and I am satisfied with it. It is in 6.5 x 55 and shoots very well(.75" and sometimes under).

I would not have them do a full-blown custom, but I like it for what it is.

Re: ER Shaw Barrels- How good are they????

I've used them on a couple of hunting rifles - a 270 wsm and a 257 roberts. Both shoot just fine at about 1 moa - and if you want to save a buck or two on a rifle that will be shot maybe 20 times per year, I would keep using them. For one of my long range rigs that will get 1000+ shots per year? Spend the extra money for a top of the line barrel
