Excess bullet drop, how do I fix it?

I am still in the camp that without MV data you are just guessing.

But in the spirit of guessing, and asking this in a respectful way but do you know how the scope works?

I have seen people thinking that half mil hashes were full Mils and therefore doubling the amount of holdover they thought they were using.

As an aside, on older shooters at the range.....
They come alone. Their children arent interested in guns, shooting, or comraderie. Many of their peers are gone. They shoot alone, waiting on the time they join their peers under dirt and granite.
For many, their families are in other states, seen only at Christmas. And dont care about guns...

These older shooters can be an asset to new shooters.
A new shooter can give an older shooter purpose, and a new breath in an otherwise passing life.
Those old shooters possess a font of knowledge their generation was taught to share. Most look forward to sharing.

A new shooter can bring a level of life, back into the older shooter, and by doing so, can gain a teacher, much knowledge, and make a friend and shooting partner, a very wise investment.

They can open doors to others who may have things new shooters need as well, like private ranges, gun collection sales, all kinds of equipment they can no longer use, the list is endless.

Asset, tool, knowledge, guidance, an older shooter can be a gift sent younger shooters need.

Food for thought..
Please consider it.

Thanks to everyone who gave their input. This past weekend I got the opportunity to put a few rounds down range with a LabRadar. My 20" .308 was at 2505fps with an SD of 10 using factory Federal 168gr Sierra Matchking's.

I also did a more deep-clean on the barrel the day prior to shooting.

Unfortunately I'm still at 4.0 MOA to hit 200yrds from my 100yrd zero, so that's still an issue.

I'm going to end up buying a new barreled action so I'd like y'all's thoughts in a new thread I'm about to start: "factory barreled action: 308 or 6.5?"

Thanks guys.

I'm sure there are several of us here that are going to be trying to solve this riddle to death. I know you stated your scope is FFP but I must ask the stupid question that you are certain? The 4 MOA drop at 200 yards just doesn't make sense...

Are you SURE you aren’t counting half mil marks on your reticle or something? My 20” .308 is running about 2550 and it’s 2 MOA for 200 yards.

It’s physics, you don’t need a new barreled action, there is something else going on. If your MV matches other people who are at 2 MOA at that distance it’s impossible that you are actually at 4 MOA.

Also, I went back to re-read your OP and saw that you mentioned being a novice shooter. It doesn’t say how novice so I have to ask...

Just to make sure we are speaking the same language you are hitting approximately 8” low on your 200 yard target correct?

Just want to ensure the same understanding of what 1 MOA is at 200 yards.

OP - what’s the latest update?
Thank all of you for the help. I did narrow it down to my scope, more accurately the parallax adjustment. It also had a bit to do with my LOP and cheek hight. I was adjusting my parallax to get the clearest resolution. The only way to do that at 200 yards was to set it to infinity instead of the 200yrd range. Add that to my head being in the wrong place and my impacts looked to be landing much lower than they should.

So it came down to my lower-end scope and not knowing exactly what parallax was and how it worked. Y'all we're a big help so thank you

I'm glad to here that you are starting to come up with some answers as to what has been causing your apparent low impacts. As a new shooter it can be frustrating sometimes when things just don't make sense. Sounds like you have been given some great advice and you used it to work through the problem. Good luck with your shooting and ask any questions you have. There are always people here that would love to help.

The velocity on the side of the box rarely matches real world. They are often tested under ideal conditions using a longer barrel. Same applies to load data from reloading manuals or websites.

I have shot a lot of different calibers, hand loads and box ammunition, across a chronograph and I can only remember a couple of times they matched or were within an acceptable fps limit.

Zero at 100, zero for 200 and then 300. Write down the differences. Then input a velocity into you ballistics program to see if they match up. If not you need to try different velocities until you find one that matches your drops. Then you will know what your real velocity is, not what is in the box.
