Experimental Aircraft

OP is white screen of death.

Had a guy a few years in front of me in high school, family was hardcore. Father was a pilot of many things, they had a sod landing strip on their property. Son was even more hardcore. By his early 40s he was a certified pilot of pretty much everything, helicopters and fixed wing, and was one of only 3 people in the nation certified to solo pilot the corporate jet which was his main job. He also featured in a James Bond film for ultralights he built.

A couple months ago he was piloting a different type of ultralight near a local airport, it is still unclear what went wrong. But he lost control and wrapped himself around a tree. Nothing to be done for him. It's a risk of the game.

I fly commercial more than I want, I hate it, but am marveled by the safety record. I love the thought of flights, but could never be a pilot myself. My hats off to those that do.

My only foray into EA:

Rotorway.jpg

Rotorway is just a few miles down the road from me at Stellar. What did you think of them? I've got a few hours in the R22, but nothing in a Rotorway. Maybe I should go check them out, just for giggles? :)

Pic was from about 1999/2000 right there in Chandler. Demo flight as I was picking up my 162F kit. Looks like they're still in business w/ a newer model (+$100k ). I pussied out though and sold kit before starting on it figuring I'd die if I ever got it built. Definitely worth a visit.

Yeah, Chandler looks a little different now for sure! And yeah, they're not cheap, but even the little 22 is a quarter mil new, so I guess you save $150K building it yourself, eh? So you have your rotorcraft ticket, or were you planning to work on it while you built the kit?

You could always give it another go with a Mosquito for some $40K. :ROFLMAO:

The original Salad Shooter. Only $19.95 plus S&H. But wait, there's more. Order in the next 30 minutes and receive a free LAU 7 (ordinance not included). Mail before midnight so we get it faster.

Hi,

Well a few of these can be thrown in for the right buyer :)

No, don't have my ticket. Can't tell if they still do it but back then Rotorway had a training program that let you get some of your hours in your own machine saving $$$ off training costs. Looks like the new A600 base is now $149K. When I was there the employees had just bought the company and you could tell there was a sense of pride in their work. I got a quickie tour and remember being told the only thing they didn't do in house was was the crankshaft forgings. I'm sure they've upped their manufacturing game substantially in the last 20 yrs. I'd say definitely check it out if you're that close.

Ya, 100% real and 100% crazy too.

It won't be too long before he dies. If he loses an engine, he's done. No way to glide, no way to auto-rotate like a helicopter, and he's way to low for a parachute.
Survivable over water, which is where he usually flies, but over land = death.

Site indicates it can run on one engine of the two on board. Must be built to Navy spec.

Only 6 minutes of endurance if something is wrong you will find out pretty quick.

Over at CMP forum this thread has been going awhile........

Some knowledgeable people posting about a variety of aircraft.

Radial Engines give me a boner.

That's not TMI that's just a normal human response.
At the HAFB air musuem they have a radial that is a cut away(B17 or B29 I think), Along with a Merlin or Rolls Royce (p51 mustang I think) I haven't been for a few years (15ish) but they were on stands with electric motors that spun them at about 10rpm. As a mechanic, watching them was hypnotizing. If @barneybdb makes it up my was was thinking of taking him there. They have a 1 of a kind SR71 that everyone likes to gawk at, and very few know its full story.

Funny SR71 Story. Worth the listen.

This is just a short clip from his speach. If you look for him on youtube, and I suggest you do, you'll find an hour long video about his life. Its a very worthy 1hr to watch, and educational as well.

Funny SR71 tidbit.
We built the SR71 to spy on the Russians. The plane is built almost entirely out of Titanium but back in those days, the USA didn't have access to enough Titanium to build the plane, let alone a dozen or so of them.

Russia was the Titanium empire back then so guess who sold us the Titanium to build a plane to spy on them? True fact. Of course, they didn't know it was the USA buying it.

I always wondered about Russia and its ability to use titanium.

I visited the Yuri Gargarin monument when I was over there and they were proud of its titanium construction. I was impressed as I thought it a rare metal.

That looks like a very awesome place. Do you know how it compares to the National Air and Space Museum at the Smithsonian?
It's been ages since I was at the Smithsonian so my recall is pretty hazy. I will say the AF museum at Wright-Patterson is immense. However, it is focused exclusively on USAF history while the Smithsonian contains a broader collection.

The Hazy Center at the Smithsonian is quite spectacular, a great addition to what they have on the Mall. Visit both places you get the full spectrum of US involvement in flight both military and civilian.
