I have been trying to improve my diet a bit recently. After years of reading about how great this Mediterranean diet is I began looking into it a bit. A lot of what was involved was stuff I was already doing. One thing I learned quickly is that not all Olive Oil is the same. Of course some of it might be outright counterfeit, and some of it is just lower grade than what you were really looking for.

Some background: The olive is a fruit, so olive oil is a fruit juice. As such it will never get better than the day it was made. So if the olive oil you are buying does not tell you when and where it was pressed it may not be the best olive oil possible. There are a couple of different olive oil specialty stores in the local malls, so I went to them and tried some of their different EVO's and some of it was OK. I bought a few bottles and enjoyed it. Yet when I went on the foodie websites and read the books they seemed to promise more. More robust flavor, more fruity, buttery, peppery, after bite. Often these sites provided sources to EVO that was priced higher than Federal match primers when Obummer was dealing coke from 1600 PA ave. While I do want the good stuff, at some price it is just too much.

As I continued to study I read about some if the new ranches in Texas that make good EVO but don't have the cult following yet. https://texasoliveranch.com I ordered an assortment from this guy. Today I cracked open his Picual EVO, WOW! It lived up to my expectations. Their website calls the Picual Buttery, Slightly Sweet, Peppery, Fruity and I really have to agree, perhaps most of all with the "peppery" description. Texas Olive Oil Ranch Picual has at least ten times the flavor of the EVO's that the gourmet stores in the malls are calling robust. At $30 for 500 ml it is not cheap but they do give free shipping on orders over $90.

For me it is a lot easier to eat better when the better food tastes better than the poorer choices, and for me this is some real good stuff.

Do I have any complaints? Of course I have a complaint. The package arrived and I opened it, the bottles were wrapped in bubble wrap. That was nice, but the bubble wrap was covered with Styrofoam peanuts. I hate Styrofoam peanuts, I hope some day they get the air bags Amazon uses to fill packages.

    Olive oil from Texas?

Don't get me wrong, the Med diet is great, but the oil sounds a bit "New York City salsa."

But I'll price check and see how it stacks up to a Bertolli.

Thanks for that info. Never thought of the olive as a fruit but one should always be learning. Ill look at the websit. Pesrsonally, Ive always preferred Greek OO over Italian or Spanish.

Chek ot the assortment at Whole Foods. I asked one of the girls and she opened several bottles so I could try them. Maybe they would do a 'tasting' one Saturday.

Concerning diet, yeah the Med is good. some things to consider:

-Eat as much organic as youu can. It is more nutrient filled.
-Eat less red meat and pork.
    -Eat smaller meals more often

And FWIW, fuck a bunch of styrofoam peanuts. No matter what you do they spill.

got involved with some imported olive oil from distinct families doing cold pressing from 1000 yr old trees, this stuff can not be believed as there so very few ANCIENT TREES left in Spain or Portugal or anywhere else disciples walked , seems much olive stuff is cut with canola....and other lesser derived essentials.....for me the jury is out on the stuff that is marketed to the masses...

When I worked in Chicago I worked with an Italian that moved to the USA when he was 15, he is now 81. He knows his shit when it comes to olive oil. He worked in that industry.
Do you know what Pomace is? Check that out. It is for cooking.
He showed me how to look at a bottle of oil and tip it to see how it adheres to the bottle, That tells a lot. He took me into the Italian grocery store where there were lots of choices and showed me how to grade it that way, then age of the oil comes in. You want fresh oil.
Much of the oil sold here is blended and what is called EVOO is not, but blended.
It used to be that Bertolli's was something you could count on, not so much now, they got too big.
It is hard to find fine oil and so much has been touted about it and it's benefits that there is a high demand for it. With that demand comes pollution of just exactly what EVOO is.
I would damn sure try some oil from Texas and if they have it right I would know right off of the bat.
EVOO is for salad and the finer things in life. Pomace is for cooking. Very few know the difference. To an Italian pomace is second press courser oil, not the phony blends out in the market now. FM

Much like fine wine, it has a lip (how it adheres to the glass) a nose (how it smells) color, etc. Good post FM.

I get my EVOO for free from my family's farm in Greece. They have been growing olives and making Olive oil for several generations. They ship us a care package every summer.

Nothing you can buy comes close

Any chance you could get a little extra to sell to your friends on the hide?

Very interesting.... we get bottles from Buselhalter-6's mother in Pittsburgh for Christmas every year... Great stuff. She gets from some Italian store and it's amazing. I used to buy the grocery store stuff, but after her bottles... nothing compares.

Thanks for this thread! Bread, some balsamic, some crushed red peppers and olive oil... makes an amazing appetizer. Or dinner. With a suitable cianti!

    Cheers,

    Sirhr

    Someone mention packing peanuts? ;)

I worked at Williams Sonoma one Xmas back when designer EVOO and Balsamic was the latest craze. We had a tasting bar with fresh bread etc. I used to laugh at the money people spent on some of the shit simply because it came in a cool bottle or cost the most (so it had to be better).

I'll 100% agree that quality oil is amazing, and that sadly there's a lot of bullshit on the shelves. Thanks for the heads up on the TX producers.

this a bit off topic but i thought i would share cause it changed my life. i was given a olive oil lemon and coke cleanse along with pottasium citrate the next morning. (you gonna be shitting all day so dont make plans)

and fresh squeezed lemon and water the next five days it was for gull stones. i swear after the five days you feel amazing. knees didnt hurt as much etc. it taste nasty but is very easy and cheap.

google it its a common remedy. im gonna do one after the holidays. i have not had gull stone issues in 5 years by doing this a couple times a year.
