My question is, what do you feel is too close on eye relief? I have a Vortex Viper that I am trying to mount on a 300 RUM. The stated eye relief is 3.1 -3.3 " I have tried every mounting position from, prone, bench and free hand to get eye relief close to those #s and best I can do is 2 3/4" on low power. Anything on highest power is closer to 2 1/2". That puts my face closer than I'm wanting to chance. I'v been scoped before (only once in 40yrs of shooting/hunting) to know its zero fun, and def don't want to catch one from that gun.
Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are, and have you encountered the same situation before?
Thank you for any informative replies?

That Vortex should have plenty of eye relief. Even if you are at the low end , you should not get scope bit with a proper mounting of your gun. NPoA , Proper mounting of your scope , and a good position should leave you GTG.

What is the LOP on that rifle? You want that RUM loaded at magnum with the stated relief below 14x. Unless you have a brake and please tell me you don't.

Have Seekins mount & rings. I've bedded the mount & all torqued (except top rings) & mounted properly. (Unless I'm missing something) Having my face within 2" is a little unsettling.

LOP is 13.6" No brake. Have had it down to 6X. At best 2 3/4"

Well, I wouldn't shoot a RUM at level 3 with less than 2". You want workable eye relief up to 14x. You don't want to be leaning in too much to get a proper sight picture. Between you and the rifle you're losing an inch or so unless by chance it is the scope. So, to be sure check the relief with the scope off the rifle.

I know it kicks but for every action there is an equal opposite one. Easier softer ways avail us nothing. I don't need to remind an old member how we used to manage recoil for free. I was just setting the stage for the next nimrod to suggest a brake as a solution.

Eye relief changes slightly depending on how diopter is set. It might just be that for your eyes and diopter setting, the relief is shorter. That's just the way it is.

Thanks for all the input. Unfortunately results haven't mattered if the scope was mounted or not. Even had someone else look thru it. After doing a little research, I found it wasn't completely uncommon for that model. I've spoke to the manufacturer, and was told the scope is fine, and because it's been over 60 days from purchase, there's nothing they can do. Would have liked them to at least look at it. Worse is that was the model recommended based on budget & application when I spoke to them originally.
To be honest, I just started messing with this gun again. Wasn't really sure what I was going to do with it & life kinda happened. It will definitely have a brake on it very soon. Might be the real reason it got put aside for so long?
