Rifle Scopes eye relief

Re: eye relief

My Leupolds are the same way but my Nightforces are a little more forgiving. I'm not sure how the higher end scopes like S&B are.

Re: eye relief

All FFP scopes are going to be more critical of eye relief at the maximum power. Depending on the scope brand and quality will decide how finicky it is, but they are all still picky at the max power. My USO is still very tight at maximum power but less so than my SWFA SuperSniper. The higher the power goes, the more picky they become.

Re: eye relief

I have the same experience with both brands as mentioned above and can add that nt S&Bs are much more forgiving than high powered Leupolds. I really couldn't say the 5-25x PM II is better or worse than thr 5.5-22x56 NF I had in that regard.

Re: eye relief

I could be wrong, but I think the reason that the eye relief seems more critical at higher power is because the exit pupil is much smaller. The old school rule of thumb was to divide the objective diameter by the magnification to find the exit pupil. I remember the small objective 24x and 36x Leupold BR scopes as particularly good examples of this.
I would love to hear an expert's explanation.

Re: eye relief

jrm850 is right, the size of the exit pupil at higher magnifcation is significantly less than lower magnifcations. 1chota I would hazard a guess you have two 3-18x42 IOR scopes, the eyebox on those scopes is considered very tight compared to the newer 3-18x50 FFP. The eye relief on those scopes is supposedly 3 1/2 inches but I think because of the scopes design its hard to get that full value.

Re: eye relief

thanx. i really have to hold on to that .308 with it on high power to keep from getting the crescent cut on the eyebrow. when i shoot a match (i have only shot two) i set it on 10X and it doesn't seem to be so bad.again, thanx
