We have 2 classes.

Some similarities. No trigger pull weight restrictions, no set or electronic triggers, you can shoot off the ground on a mat or on the bench. The bipod can be connected to the rifle, you can use a rear bag, or you can use a front rest. Rear rest can not be attached, and the 2 rest can not be connected. Rifle can not weigh more than 18 pounds.

F-Standard will be 308 or 223 no exceptions. F-Open is any caliber 8mm and below and the rifle can weigh 22 pounds.

I shoot F-Open, but I think if I end up staying in Australia I'll build a F-Standard rifle on a BAT action.

In the US, we also have two classes, but there are more differences between them.

There is F-Open, which will be similar to the OZ version, 8mm or smaller caliber, 10 Kg weight limit, mechanical rests allowed, any rear bag.

Then there is F-T/R, 8.25 Kg, bipod only for front support, .308 or .223 only, any rear bag allowed.

The main difference here is that all matches are shot from the prone position. The only time I've seen people allowed to shoot from a bench in an F-Class match (as opposed to an F-Class style Benchrest match) is if they are physically infirm.

If you are shooting in OZ, keep in mind that there is a rapidly growing group of F-T/R shooters there. The mindset of some Australian shooters is that F-Standard is simply F-Open "lite" (with the caliber restriction). If you shoot F-T/R, you will be able to shoot in International competition, not so with F-Std, which is an Australia only class.

If needed, I can PM you with contact info for some OZ F-T/R shooters.

Hope this helps,

Darrell

Muskox,

F/TR should be approved by the NRAA board soon so building a F/TR spec rifle would be the way to go I reckon. Should hear by then end of this week we hope about the status of F/TR. I shoot a 308 of a Atlas bipod and as far as I know, she conforms to F/TR specs.

Where in Australia are you? I'm in West Aussie.

Btw Darrel, nice seeing you here mate.

Quick,

I am in Canberra. KAM-brah!

Our club is full of very old men. Really sad, not a lot of draw for F-Class for the younger folks in Canberra.
