Well, I've ordered my 300 BLK barrel and I want to put a early FAL style slotted type flash hider on it. Inch pattern FAL flash hiders are tapped 9/16 X 24, and are too thin to ream out and re-tap.Since the barrel is threaded 5/8 X 24 it looks like I need to fabricate one.

A friend of mine has the mills and lathes to do this project, but I don't know what steel to use or what hardness it should end up at.
The finished part will be threaded 5/8 X 24, length will be 4 inches, bore diameter of .420 and have 5 slots. The O.D. hasn't been decided on yet. (Depends on the diameter of the barrel at the muzzle.)

Is this a feasible project, or should I forget it and go with what's available commercialy?

Any thoughts or advice will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Fabricating An AR Flash hider

Well... I've built alot of ar's in my day and there is alot of commercial brakes and flash hiders out there. But There is nothing wrong with getting off the path and doing somthing new. I say do it! Keep us posted.

Re: Fabricating An AR Flash hider

I know for a fact Doublestar uses 1018 cold rolled in their turning centers to make flashiders. Would be no sense to make it of anything else unless you were going to heat treat it. Hope this helps, good luck with your flashider.

Re: Fabricating An AR Flash hider

A flash hider could be made out of the 1018 with no problem, if you want more durability you could always case harden it. Now if you would going to make a brake of any kind it would have to be hardened 4140/416R..etc. The one's I've made were out of barrel stubs and RC was in the 28-30 range.
