My rifle was built with the 95 palma chamber and I am trying to better understand factory ammo options that are available to get the most out of my rifle since I am not reloading at this time. Any help is greatly appreciated.

vwturbo,

There's going to some significant differences between a rifle that's merely been chambered with a Palma reamer, and one that's actually set up for Palma competition. The Palma reamers tend to run very short throats, as they're set up for the standard 155 grain Palma bullets, seated to 2.800". Not a lot of wiggle room here, as this is what the international Palma rules require. In order to keep the bullets supersonic out to 1,000, these guns are nearly always set up with 29"-30" barrels, generally using tighter bore dimensions than standard 308 Win chambered rifles. With a normal 22"-24" 308 rifle, using the standard 1x12" .3000" bore, .3085" groove barrel, you're usually going to have some difficulty (okay, a lot of difficulty) in keeping them supersonic all the way out. Just comes down to building a rifle for a specific task, and matching the components to meet that task.

In using the Palma reamers, you're going to deal with a very short throat, which will somewhat limit the use of heavier bullets. Not a problem if you're more focused on the lighter weight projectiles, and it'll no doubt shoot them just fine. Just curious what you set the rifle up for, and why you choose the Palma reamer?

It was recommended by one of the local trainers/pro's on our local board. Wasn't planning on shooting the super heavy stuff, 155's and 175's were suggested with 168's being somewhere in the "results may vary" category.
Thoughts?

Twist rate on bbl?
Mag system used?
Max OAL per magazine?
Running a repeater or a single shot?
What is end use? Tactical matches, F-class matches, Palma matches, informal LR shooting or hunting?

Short throat and wanting to reach out there I'd be taking a hard look at JLK 175, 180LBT, 190 or Berger 155, 168, 175, 190 VLDs or 185 Juggernaut if you want to run from an AICS magazine or similar.

Barrel is a 26" 1/11.25 twist 5R
PTG Bottom metal with AICS type mags
This is just for informal LR

Main issue is I am looking for recommendations on factory available ammo since reloading at this time is not an option

Is the use of Palma reamer by custom builders common? I couldn't figure out why my rifle won't seat 175 SMK, 167 Scenar, or 155 Scenars to 2.800 without being crammed at least 20 thousandths in to the lands.

vwturbo,

You'll need to match them up to the throat, but it shouldn't be a problem. You'll likely wind up seating them a bit more deeply than you would otherwise, but with stuff up to 175 or so, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. With any of the heavier bullets (say, 190s or thereabouts), you're going to wind up seating them deeply enough that it'll encroach on the powder capacity a bit. Certainly nothing wrong with a Palma reamer, but you do need to understand that it was set up around the various 155 grain Palma bullets, at an OAL of right about 2.800". Anything that deviates very far from this, is going to require a little accommodation and adjustment.
