FAL for Urban Sniper Rifle?

Hello,

I am new to this forum and wanted to know if anyone has built a FAL into a decent shooting sniper rifle? I have my Rem 700 bolt gun in .308 and am very happy with it but want to build a reliable semi auto .308 for shorter distances. I have a inch L1A1 FAL and was thinking of tuning it up for better accuracy. Does anyone have experience with the FAL as a sniper rifle? I know this is not the most accurate platform, but my budget precludes me from investing in an AR-10 and starting from scratch. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Hide

forget about tuning up a battle rifle like your FAL for precision work, in the end you'll still have a FAL, and your wallet will be a lot lighter.

Re: FAL for Urban Sniper Rifle?

Cobra is right. The FAL, while a good and reliable weapon, is not a sniper weapon. There are much better semi platforms available if you want a "sniper" rifle. Keep the FAL for what it's meant to be, a battle rifle. Take the money you intended to spend pimping out your FAL and put it towards another rifle. Not the answer you wanted but the FAL is not the answer to your question either.

Re: FAL for Urban Sniper Rifle?

It can be done but as noted above its not a worthy pursuit. IIRC DSA really pursued this at length but abandoned the project. As a design it just has to many obstacles to overcome for precision rifle work.

On a side note, unless you are a slotted sniper or on the job as such, we tend to call them precision rifles

Especially first post asking about an "<span style="font-weight: bold">urban</span> sniper rifle." Are you f-ing kidding me? Sit back a spell and wise up. I'm surprised you got any serious answers.

Re: FAL for Urban Sniper Rifle?

Several years ago I had Vandenberg build up a precision FAL with an aftermarket barrel, freefloat handguard, muzzle break and several other things and about as precision as I ever got was about 1.75-2 MOA. on a good day. It is a cool looking and 100% reliable rifle but an AR style rifle will out do it in the accuracy department easily. Now if you use a FAL for which they were designed they are just about without equal.

Re: FAL for Urban Sniper Rifle?

Urban sniper and 400m range...well perhaps if villages of Iraq are a definition of urban and even there i'd say 400m is pretty extreme range. Most fights in Ex Yugo, Chechnya towns were limited to 200-300m with majority being closer to 100m. Shooting 2MOA is plenty enough at those ranges for "hunting men". Most used rifles in Yugo theater (example i know) were M76 and old Mausers (M48 and its hunting clones) which by all definitions and purposes can hardly be called sniper rifles. In modern city i really can't imagine to do more than a 200m range (except mainroads) shots...

[Sarcasm on]But i guess shooting enemy in the eye instead of somewhere in centermass gets you additional style points with your CO and huge bragging rights in local bars if one makes it back...[/Sarcasm on]

Ernest Hemingway ???

Re: FAL for Urban Sniper Rifle?

I dumped a HUGE amount of money into a FAL in the pursuit of accuracy (I'm stubborn like that). In the end,I should have spent it on hookers and booze... instead I wasted it.

Re: FAL for Urban Sniper Rifle?

Since this thread is actually getting play, I just have to ask (especially from the LE's), how do I set up a good urban hide to go with my urban sniper rifle? Does the loop-hole in the back of a car trunk really work as good as Malvo said? What is the best caliber for taking down people in the city? Is it the same as in the country? What is the best building to set up in on a college campus for sniping? What if there is no bell tower?

Re: FAL for Urban Sniper Rifle?

It amazes me that the mention of "FAL" causes everybody to disengage their brains. First post from a guy wanting info on an urban sniper rifle, with a sig line that references hunting men, from Virgina no less. Are you kidding me?

Clearly this Dave guy needs to be investigated ASAP.
