Movie Theater Favorite movies from the 1970's

Got tired of watching the same old predictable crap. Special effects, crappy acting, regurgitated junk.

So I started searching for movies from the early 1970's. I was still a yungin so I do not remember them, and unless the movie won an Oscar, I doubt they hit dvd, but with netflix and online streaming I have run into a few cool movies.

The first was Jeremiah Johnson. Robert Redford goes into the mountains to be a mountain man.

The next was Mean Streets, trippy New York flick with Harvey Keitel and De Niro.

I am gonna watch Kelly's Heroes tonight.

Of course many of these movies were shot, dubbed and not the best effects, but still something new to me and maybe other Gen-x'rs.


Any good movies from the 1970's that you remember, that may have gotten lost in the shuffle.

I would go about your quest by looking into great actors of that era.

Great titles, exactly what I was looking for. As for the Emmanualle movies, I seen those when my parents first got cable. I think thats why I have to wear glasses now. Oh the shame. lol

An excellent movie that is actually from 1967.
Hombre
starring Paul Newman

The main character was taken by Apache indians as a child.
The movie is about the same person as an adult trying to get by in the world of settlers.

I got it in a $5 bin at Wal-Mart.
A western but not a fast paced shoot-em-up like most from that time period.
As much as anything it is a snapshot on prejudice.

Can't find fault with any recommendations above... +1 for The Mechanic and Three Day of the Condor!

Raid on Entebbe (made for TV)

And one of my all-time favorites: Being There (Peter Sellers)

Plus the '70's was a fantastic era for really badly-acted disaster movies that had 'everyone' in them. Airport/Airport 77, The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno. Fun watching the disasters play out before CGI imaging. Then watch Airplane!

Don't forget the great politically incorrect comedies. Blazing Saddles (a movie that could NEVER be made today), Every Which Way But Loose, Young Frankenstein, Animal House, Harold and Maude (another personal favorite). Plus original Muppet Movie... which was fun if you grew up on The Muppet Show.

Also a favorite Western... "They Call me Nobody" with Henry Fonda. GREAT flick and very off-beat tribute to Sergio Leone that most Western fans will enjoy.

The '70s had lots of good ones out there for movie fans! And I can honestly say that I saw Star Wars in the theater... a week after it was released. No 13-year-old had ever even come close to seeing a movie like that! I think I saw it about 10 times...

Marathon man (is it safe?) I love that part . Ill have to buy that on dvd and watch that part when my daughter brings her boyfriend over.With the dental tools sitting on the table next to a bottle of whiskey for full effect.

Not a great flick, but should be seen.

I forgot how awesome Westworld was. I need to get that on DVD. Haven't seen it since, probably, high school. Yul Brenner was a great!

Anything w. Michael Crighton behind it (especially his books) is outstanding. The movie "The Andromeda Strain" is excellent. Not as good as the book. But still great.

Also, it's from 1963 but it's one of my favorite movies of all time and I think you'll like it if you like old war movies. It's "The Great Escape" with Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, James Donald, Charles Bronson, Donald Pleasence, and James Coburn. Fantastic movie.

OT but I grew disenchanted with Hollyweird a while back and started watching a lot of foreign language films, mostly Italian, Spanish, French and Indian. Even if you can't find a subtitled copy, there are websites that provide enthusiast-created subtitle files. These are best used with VideoLan's VLC player because it provides controls to sync subtitle speed to movie speed.

Bollywood movies can be a hoot but they're an acquired taste. In India, the whole family goes to the movie together so each movie has to entertain everyone from the kids to the parents, so it will be a little drama, a little comedy, a little mystery, a little love story, and a little gangster flick. And every 20 minutes, for no explicable reason, 200 extras jump out of the woodwork and there'll be a mass dance number. And Bollywood movies have to be three hours long, so Dad thinks he's getting his money's worth. If you're interested, start with The Three Idiots. The first 90 minutes is hysterically funny. Their Hindi is about 20% English, so it's almost understandable, even without subtitles. My second favorite Bollywood flick is Munnabhai M.B.B.S., also mostly a comedy.
