What is the go to multi-tool in your kit. Looking at the the Leatherman MUT. Would appreciate some opinions on this or other

I've always been partial to Leatherman's. I have a MUT and it's great tool that has a lot going for it, especially for firearms use. You can set it up so that you can have the included wrench, a sleeve of bits, and some on the tool itself to cover about 20-something different fasteners that you might encounter on a firearm or accessory, all of which can be carried in the sheath. I've also used mine in combination with some Otis accessories to clean firearms out at the range and the cord cutter is nice for cutting some pieces of 550 without exposing the whole blade. That all being said the biggest negative I have for the MUT is that it's just so damn big and heavy, it's the primary reason I don't use it as often as my other Leatherman's. Lately, it's been hanging out on my battle belt and I pack my Leatherman Wave in my pack for matches and most range trips. The Wave packs in a bunch of tools and it accepts the same bits as the MUT so you can set it up to do the common fasteners too but it's all in a much lighter, compact package.

Leatherman also has a pretty good warranty, several years back I sent in an original Leatherman Wave that I'd broken a flat head tool off on and they ended up replacing it with a new Wave tool free of charge.

I carry a Leatherman SideKick every day and keep a Borka Tools MG19 kit in my range bag. Having a monster multi-tool in your pocket gets old after a while.

I should have stated that I have a full Borka kit in my bag. What I wanted in addition was the tools that the Borka kit doesn't include like knives, saws, wire cutter, pliers, etc.

The MUT has overlap with the Borka and it is large and heavy.

Any other recommendations that you guys have tried?

I've used a couple Gerber multi-tools, which some guys seem to favor over the Leatherman tools but I've broken two and called it quits after that.

MultiTasker tools are another really good option if you want to supplement the Borka kit with tools for working with firearms and accessories, specifically the AR-15 platform. They have a solid reputation amongst instructors and the like, I just haven't used them myself to see what the hub bub is all about.

I have been carrying a MUT for several years now daily. For my uses it's about as good as it gets, the bronze scraper tool gets a lot of use when cleaning firearms.

I don't see why the MultiTasker wouldn't be good for a bolt gun too, it's got a 1/2" wrench tool, interchangeable bits, and similar features compared to the MUT. In addition, with the increased use of chassis systems that utilize AR components, the castle nut tool could have some benefits too.

So far the Borka field kit is all I need, and leathermans are the best thing since the Swiss Army knife.

I always like a Gerber tool until my son carried his to deployment in Afghanistan. His tool suffered a broken plier jaw under a normal usage. Gerber warrantied the tool without question but I never trusted their tools again. I use Leatherman tools now.

I'm still using my GI Gerber. A lot of the type 3 anodizing has come off but, had served me well then and is still serving me today. Till it breaks, I won't replace it

These look like what I am looking for but there are none for sale anywhere that I could find. I contacted the company and they are coming out with a new MkIII version at the end of March. I'm going to wait for that and make a decision

I have and use the gerber suspension. I carry and use it at work, moto adventures, fishing. I don't know a hole lot about multi-tools but i think plyers are the main reason i bring have them with me. I alway have a pocket knife with me anyways.

Leatherman MUT in the backpack for range trips and rifle matches. Leatherman Charge AL. for daily use. ( My ZT 0350 also rides along both places. )

Ive always favored Gerber multi tools. Carry mine daily at work, have one in range bag, and one in door pocket of vehicle. They are very easy to open using one hand. A quick flick of the wrist and you're ready to work.

I've seen only one or two Leatherman's that were used enough to flip handles open using a single hand.

I used to carry a Gerber multi tool, but after it broke I went with the Leatherman wingman for on the job EDC. It's lasted a trip to Kandahar while the Gerber didn't...

I admit to being a Leatherman fanboy. I've got quite a few of them, from the MUT on down to the Style. It's good to be able to pick the right tool for the job. I found a brand new Juice in the parking lot at REI a few years ago and didn't think I would, but I do like it. Can't beat that price.

Same here, ended up with a WAVE a few years back and found it to be the best overall MT for me. It's my EDC, also have one in each of my vehicles, including the motorcycles. I've found them on Ebay for as little as $30 used and $65 new.

I have the Original Leatherman Supertool 300 that I bought in 97, It has saved my Bacon hundreds of times, But If I was buying one Today it would be the MUT followed by the EOD, But the Supertool is the Original Leatherman and it is still 100% Serviceable and never lets me down, My Brother bought the Gerber model but it is not in the same League as the SuperTool. 20 years and still going strong.

I do a fair bit of traveling for work, and invariably end up repairing a lot of guns in the process. My Borka set is invaluable for sure, but I also have it augmented with a few punches, a 4" wrench extension bar, AP brush, angled forceps and my Leatherman Wave. The Wave hardly gets used though, last 10 week trip it didn't get used once for anything other than a hammer as the two tools I carry in my pocket work better.

The first I carry every day for the last four or so years is the now discontinued Emerson EDC-1, it was replaced by the EDC-2 (same tool minus the wrench piece), and is a cooperative effort from Emerson and Multitasker. It has a blade with Emerson's Wave, phillips and flat screwdrivers, and best of all is a very sharp awl/scraper tool. The tools are tough as hell with my blade still in great shape, although this last run I leant it out and it came back with a bent awl tip, last time that guy touched it and another lesson learned... Street price of the EDC-2 is around $125, and is worth every penny.

The second tool I use the hell out of is a Leatherman Freestyle, the small type Leatherman with just needle-nose and a combo blade. I got this as an anniversary gift from my old company, only had to work for them for five years to get it! Anyhow, the small footprint of it is perfect for the pocket, and I found the smaller pliers are far better for working on weapons than a standard size Leatherman Wave. Replacing extractors, picking little bits out of rifles, clearing nasty double/triple feeds, cutting springs down, it did it all. It's comfortable in the hand too, and nimble for delicate work. At $40, it cannot be beat for handiness at a low price point.

I have a monster sized Leatherman SuperTool I bought for the range bag prior to the MUT being released, it hasn't seen the light of day in years. Now that I think of it, I probably should just sell it in hopes it gets some kind of usage. I really like the MUT as well, but with the Borka set and usage specific punches, I see it more as doing a lot of things but none of them well so I won't be getting one myself. My co-worker that had a MUT asked to borrow my tools more than a few times, at least he wasn't the one that damaged my awl tip.

I just got a MUT for my range kit. The MUT along with an Otis cleaning kit is all I really need. I carry a smaller Leatherman on a daily basis. The MUT really is huge and heavy. I'd stay away from Gerber. I broke the plier jaws on mine back in the Army. My Leatherman has never failed me.

I bought the Multitasker Mk III...It is a great AR multi-tool...not so much for bolt gun. It also has a good variety of other tools that are handy as well

Have several different leathermans and Gerbers. My favorite is the Gerber 600 Pro Scout. Both gerber and Leatherman are made in the US, but the Gerber is much more useful. Pics show the Gerber 600 pro scout open and closed. The open one was issued to me in the Canadian infantry 30 years ago and is still in great shape after much abuse. The biggest feature is the saw uses jigsaw blades so are easily replaceable and I carry metal and wood ones in the carrier. The MUT sits at home. You can buy 2-3 gerbers for the price of the mut.

I’m on my 4th wave. I use it several times a day, the warranty is great if you do break one. I currently have 2 that need to be sent in. One got ran over, the other has a broken flat tip. Still checks all the boxes for me, the surge is too big.
