Maggie’s Favorite restaurant?

Tekka Sushi
5th & Balboa
San Francisco, CA

but you better be serious about your sashimi...

House rules:

no forks
no sodas
no cooked food (no tempura/no teriyaki)
no complaining
no rush service
no credit/no checks
no reservations
no to go/take out
no weekends

Seats 9 people; get there around 5pm for the ~6:30 opening. (I've seen 'em line up as early as 3:30pm...) Stuff yourself with some of the best sashimi/sushi on the West Coast; a big appetite could cost ~ $75/person (drinks separate). We came with $200 apiece. If you miss the first round, come back at 8pm for the 9 o'clock tables. (Generally, there are only two "shifts" per night; you could conceivably wait for an open table ~ 45-60 minutes after the open, but I wouldn't bet it.) This mom-and-pop restaurant is like some of the pre-WWII restaurants in Japan. One short counter and two 2-person tables. Damn little English spoken here. Call a day or two before to confirm they aren't on vacation... sometimes they're late because of traffic, but it'd be a drag to hunt for parking only to find they're not gonna open. For sashimi/sushi, I've had better in Japan, but only right next to Tsukiji's market; and there's absolutely no place in USA that's consistently the equal of Tekka... that's my way of hedging my testimony that this is the best sashimi/sushi house I've ever been to in the USA. I've been there five times over 20 years' time.

The sign below says the 'special' is, "Chef's choice" (Omakase)

Ichiban - Winnipeg
Suhiro's - Vancouver
Chic-n-Rib's - The Pas
Wah Lee - Brandon
Jimmy's Place - Portage La Prairie
Monticello's - Mackenzie
Sizzling Dhaba - Winnipeg

They say that Hy's Steakhouse in Winnipeg is good, but we haven't been there yet.

The Gumbo Shop in New Orleans. I used to prefer Buster Holmes on Bergundy, then it closed down. Also liked Mike Anderson's on Burbon St. but Katrina killed it.

El Burrito's in Ft. Collins, Elway's in Denver - so many great places closed in CO also.

Su Casa in Chicago

You TX guys like Hard 8 ? We go to the one just east of Grapevine when we're down there. What is JR's in Grapevine? Haven't heard of that one.

I have been to Hard 8 in Roanoke and I think it is one of the better BBQ places in DFW. Need to go back to make sure the quality has not dropped off.

JR's is a steak house and I think it is a great place to eat. The service has always been good, the food is outstanding and it is not to loud during dinner. It is not cheap but it is well worth it and, I think, a good value for the quality.

Haven't tried woodshed. I'll have to check it out.
Texas: Stubb's barbecue in Austin

I'm going to Del Frisco's in Dallas tonight!

If it compares to the one in Ft Worth you should not be disappointed. Dallas also has III Forks which is supposed to be good but I have not been there, yet.

Someday when I make it to California I’ll have to stop there and try it. I love sushi but have never had any legit sushi. Ive always dreamed of traveling to japan and trying it there but that will be a long time from now.

Morton’s was great last time I visited.

Most of the time I cook at home. Im pretty good at it and its about 15% the cost. Plus I dont really like all the douche bags that go to nice places in Denver......

Was just in Austin in June and was too busy with family/friends to get to any of the famous BbQ joints.
JC’s cafe in Golden is tops for a greasy spoon breakfast. Coffee sucks, have some before you go.
Smokin Yards BBQ in Idaho Springs and just off Sante Fe and 1st (ish) in Denver is great for local BBQ.
Cafe Jordano in Lakewood CO for Italian. Authentic and delicious.

Not a lot of fancy places and we all know many hole in the wall places that get it done.

Waiting for Moses the Tank to weigh in. He posts some outrageous stuff in Nom Nom.

Thurmon St. Cafe, Columbus, Oh.

Ku Akhorn, London... now out of business and a haji Hookah bar... but in its heydey, the best Thai food on the planet.

Main dining room at The Chateau Frontenac...

Benny Binions Horseshoe Lounge, Vegas..... before they made it a fern bar... and when Benny had his own ranch and all the seats were old red leather, smelled of cigar and were probably first sat on by Lucky Luciano.... It was 'that' place.

Too many others to list... But this is a great thread! I am going to try some of these places during my travels! Keep 'em coming!

Cheers,

Sirhr

Oh yeah. Any of you suckers ever make it to Seward AK, Ray’s on the waterfront is awesome. Had seared halibut and a full pound of crab legs last time I was there.

Sat looking at the small boat harbor while I devoured it.
Amazing food in a cool sea town.

If you go fishing, look for Capt Suzie (owns a boat and B&B). She hammers em and is a cool ole AK skipper

The Atomic Grill in Moab Utah.
Squatters Pub in SLC
Main Street Brewery in Cortez Colorado
Gabriellas- OKC
Bad Daddy's Burgers - Norman OK
Monteczuma-Forrest City AR (seedy joint, but killer Mex food)
Brookwood Grill- ATL
OCharleys- Bristol VA
Evolution Craft Brewing Co. & Public House -Salisbury MD
G&M Restaurant & Lounge- Baltimore MD
The Old Mill Crab House- Delmar DE
Rudys in Denton TX (best one of their stores yet)

What can I say, I like good food-with beer. Must have beer. There are so many good places in all states, I might have some sort of coronary artery disease trying to eat at them all, if my liver doesn't quit on me.

How about the Seaman's club on Diego Garcia?
The menu items suck, but they do a crazy good job of cooking the fresh fish you bring to them.
It's a great way to get together with a big party on the island.

Which one was not great Del Frisco’s or El Fenix?
El Fenix. Got a cheeseburger and it was like they buy patties that are about to go bad from school cafeterias. Went an hour-and-a-half without a refill, and finally got one after the bill came out (waiter was hoping to increase his tip I'm guessing). Lastly there was a roach running around the dining room.

Sorry for the bad experience. As long as I have lived in Texas not once have I been tempted to go an El Fenix. Never heard a single positive comment about that chain.

Headed to Panama City, Fla next week. Any recommendations?

I tend to stay more toward Destin but still go into Panama City to dive.

Some of my favorites:
Schooner's on Thomas Drive in PC Beach - best Grouper sandwich on the Emerald Coast.
Captain's Table in old Panama City at the marina - old style fish house. Really good.
Captain Anderson's has a good reputation. It's good but I don't think it's all that. J. Michaels is better in my opinion.
A new shopping center (Pier Park) has a Back Porch and Pompano Joe's - they are not the original locations but they are pretty good.

Thanks guys, I think this is our 4th trip there. We've been to Captain Anderson's and it was fine. Always end up at Pompano's at least once during the week. Will have to try Captains Table. We hit Hunts Oyster bar in Panama City a couple years ago and enjoyed it.

Lum's BBQ in Junction Texas. We were coming back from deployment for Hurricane Harvey and stumbled upon this place. They stayed open for (14 specialized water rescue personnel) us and made us feel right at home. I was immediately deployed to Hurricane Irma and we stopped there again this time with the entire team of 80 personnel. They again made it happen for a huge crowd this time.

If I am ever in the area again Ill be sure to stop.
