Re: Favorite Sniping Movie
Enemy at the Gates.
Though the P/U MN is a hunk of junk, it was adequate for the ranges they used it for there, and I doubt the Russians expected the rifle (or the sniper) to last long enough to spend a lot of money and effort on a quality rifle and scope.
the activities and cammo, as well as the equipment and tactics in the movie are pretty good, except where the plot gets kinda stupid. The story of the duel between Koniev and Zytzev is actually true. The German was shot in the face, not through the scope. As far as i know, only Hathcock ever actually pulled that off.
Saving Private Ryan pisses me off. The guy is Left handed, which no real sniper should ever be with a bolt gun (we sorted them out in selection for candidates.) Too much unnecessary movement to work a bolt on the "wrong" side.
Somehow he goes back and forth between a Army 03A4 with a late model Lyman scope on a Remington 03A4 to a Unertl on a Marine 03A1 (M1941) with a C stock, and i think a magically appearing and disappearing front sight!
He seems to remove and swap his scopeall the time. WTF? There goes his zero.
And as for being stupid enough to get in a tower with a sniper rifle at all, let alone stay there, he deserves to get blown to hell.
There is so much wrong with the SPR sniper that i actually am gettigng heart palpitations from all the screw ups. Dale Dye should have hired a real sniper to handle that guy for the movie, and ut Dale Dye was a asshole as a captain, and still thinks he knows it all. He may be able to impress and fool Hollywood actors with his bullshit, but the details aren't always there the way that he promises, and claims.
