Range Report Federal 260 Rem 142gr Gold Medal Sierra MatchKing vs Hornady 260Rem 130GR ELD

I have not tried the GMM yet, however I can speak for the Hornady. It shot superb from my Savage running a Criterion Barrel. It was between 0.5-0.75 MOA at 100yds, SD of 12. Velocity isnt very potent in either, but it is factory ammo so. A friend also had good results in his 260...

I hand load the 142 over H4350 for my AIAE, but bought a case of FGMM to try last year. It shot well at 100, but on the slow side MV wise. I’m away for awhile and don’t have my DOPE book for that rifle handy, but I recall that it trued out at 2770. Showed a fair amount of vertical at 1K, but usable. My handloads true out at 2850 out a 26” barrel.

I've shot both from my Tikka. My rifle definitely prefers the Federal 142 load over the Hornady 130. Strangely enough, while I have the same slow barrel problem Frank and others have observed, the Federal was only 20fps slower than box data where as everything else has been closer to 60-80fps slower.

If your really only shooting paper at 100, you gotta try both for yourself and see how your rifle shoots them. I’ve shot the 142s out of my AIAT and AXMC with great results out to 1000. I have two boxes of the 130s but haven’t had a chance to try them. I personally prefer the heavier 142s for distance shooting.

I've shot both from my LaRue .260 gasser with a 22" barrel and Mausingfield M5 with a 24" Krieger, both rounds were sub MOA for me. The H130 ELD-Ms group better, but we're talking a 0.25MOA difference at 100y, I've also shot both out to 1,000 in the M5 and each was consistent. Because the H130 was consistent in both a gasser and bolt, and generally cheaper than the FGMMs, I've stuck with the Hornady.

FWIW - The FGMMs will not shoot in the gasser without blowing primers. I spoke with Federal and their answer was the round was not made for an AR platform rifle. YMMV.
