I think many ammo mfg's use their own brew. Not avaiable to the public. Not sure about Federal, but find it very likley. I do not know why it would matter, as you can match velocity if you wish and improve on accuracy. JMO

Re: Federal Gold Metal Match

I got an email from one of their employees back in the 1980s. He said they used a bulk "canister" powder. But 42.5 grains of IMR 4895 and a 168 SMK would be as close as commercially available components will get you.

The Federal Match I took apart a couple of years ago suggests that they have changed to a different powder. It doesn't look like the same powder they used to use.

Good luck.

Re: Federal Gold Metal Match

Victor, you are right on the money. I just tore down 20 175 gr Federal GM 308 rounds to investigate powder charges. The average weight was 42.5 grains with a total range of 0.6 grains. The powder kernals were larger and darker than Varget.

I found a variation of 0.5 grs dropping 50 charges X 44.0 grains of Varget through my Jones measure. I was stunned to see that much. Guess I trust it too much from my BR days with H322 and N133.

Although I was relieved to see 0.6 grains variation in Federal, I still bought an RCBS Chargemaster Combo for the larger grained powders.

Re: Federal Gold Metal Match

I thought on one of these threads here I read that they were using 42.3 gr of IMR 4064, but then changed it recently. Are you trying to load them? If your making your own rounds why bother with making a clone when you can tweak to a better one for your rifle?
