FGGM or Honady Sperformance for hunting?

Hey all,

I recently built up a 308 rifle for hunting deer and I'm getting mixed results with Hornady Superformance.

This is my first "precision rifle" so I'm not willing to rule out myself as the weak link.

I thought about trying FGGM to see if I can improve my groups but I'd like to shoot with what I hunt with since this rifle will do both.

Are Sierra Matchkings a good hunting bullet? I like the SST's from what I've read on them and would prefer to stick with them but IF I can get better results using another brand I will.

Once I get shooting and start getting a reloading setup going, then I can switch back to SST's but for now I'm limited to only factory loads.

I wouldn't suggest using SMK's unless you ONLY to high shoulder shots. They're too unpredictable in performance, one will explode on impact and the next will just punch a whole straight through.

I also haven't had the best like with SST's, they like to explode when they hit game. I had a SST from a 7mm leave a 6-8" exit wound.

If you want to shoot and hunt with the same bullet the best bullet I've found for both is the Amax. They give good consistent performance on game and are as accurate as any other match bullet. You can get them loaded in the Hornady TAP ammo which ammotogo and a other sites sell. I'd recommend staying with the red box as I've had very mixed results with the black box. Also the red box comes in hornady match brass which is very good brass if you later decide to reload. Lapua Scenars are also very good but if you don't reload their ammo is way too expensive for me to shoot it.

If your not shooting passed 500 yards theres also nothing wrong with remington core lokt or federal powershock from your local sportinggoods store. I've shot both in 150gr quite a bit and both are good for sub MOA and are consistent to 500-600 yards. It's good for game or targets to that range.

Every rifle may not like them but what I've shot them in has shot them great. Same with the core lokt. The only one I've had mixed results with was the winchester power point which is why I didn't recommend it but you may want to give it a shot aswell. It shot alright in some rifles but still not as good as remington or federal but every rifle is different.

Keep in mind that 1.5MOA is adequate for deer to 400 yards if your aiming on the vitals.

are your shitty results in regards to group size or terminal performance on game?
I would also suggest trying AMAX bullets as i have had very good results (both accuracy and terminal performance) on several whitetail deer out to 300yds

Good killing with AMAX 168's, in the TAP loads. FOr that matter though, done well with the 175 GMM, and M118LR, both matchking's.

Favorite factory ammo for 308 these days is the 150 grain Vortex Barnes stuff, flat out killing stuff. Groups well in the three different 308's I shoot ( Ruger scout rifle, OBR,and TRG 22 ). We are eliminating auodad sheep on our property, that is the toughest critter I know of ( and that includes elk etc ), these things are TOUGH. Had zero, none, walk or run off yet with these tipped TSX. Bang, flop out to 400 yards.

Post edit - have not found anyone getting good ( accurate ) results from the Superformance. Was a great idea, needs more work. Bring back the Light Magnuns - those were much more accurate, put a 155 or 168 AMAX on top - Hornady are you listening?

Used to be they'd hang around when they saw the Mule, hoping I'd throw some corn or run a feeder. They now know that is the Death Wagon. They still don't know they have to run more than 150 yards yet though. They get out 3-400 yards and watch. Still have 20-30 yet to go. So tired of them destroying feeders.

I have good success on deer with SST's but prefer TSX, Partitions or Accubonds. Have never had a problem getting any of them to shoot well under moa. I like to stick to hunting bullets for animals since the accuracy is plenty good and the terminal ballistics are predictable.

Hunting accuracy amd match accuracy are two different things.

You don't need 1/2 moa ammo to harvest game. 3 inch groups will suffice, as long as they are consistent. That will get you to 300 yards on deer. (about 9 inch target).

Try the federal fusion. It is a fairly accurate load. I believe it uses the sierra gameking.

Group size but it was my first time out with the rifle. I'll have to get another few boxes and go mess around with it if you guys are saying the Walmart Federals are any good.

Federal Premium (P308C) is tough to beat for hunting. This round is loaded with 165gr Sierra GameKing BTSP. Accuracy is quite acceptable - about .1 MOA over FGMM 168, in my GAP with Rock barrel.

I bought a box of Superperformance 165gr in .30-06 to see if the hype was right. I have a Win M70 EW and a Savage 116 Weather Warrior, both of which are sub-MOA rifles with FGGM and my hand loads. While I did not have any overpressure problems with my six shots, I did get 3-4" 100 yd groups.

It may be rocket science (their ad) but it doesn't show me much yet.

Accubonds and Amax works well, but personally i now only use Barnes TTSx's for hunting, tried different bullets over the years. But my rifle seems to prefer the ttsx, it's got a decent BC and i know it will perform every time.
Started out using partitions, but after having to chase down a couple of wounded deers my hunting partners had shot with partitions, where the bullets had fragmented, bounced off shoulderbones and backwards i soon looked for something else.

I keep a couple boxes of fusion on hand, here, too

I have nothing against SMK loaded rounds either. Ive taken an elk with one but its about shot placement. You have to have the patience / fundamentals to do it right under stress rather than wound the damn thing because you were not on your game.

You could try HSM Match ammo sold through Mel E at Sniper Central. They have a 308 cal 178 Gr A-Max load that would work well. The price is not too bad @ $21.34 a box

Federal Fusion is awesome. I shoot 150's out of my Tikka T3 .270 and get consistant.3 to .5 inch groups and will drop a whitetail like a missile. Try it out.

Oh good, it's not just me. I get 3-4 inch groups out of the Superformance as well with my Savage Bear Hunter in 300 WM. Sheesh. The normal Hornady SST ammo is 1-1.5 inch groups. Same with Winchester Ballistic Silvertip. Always looking for better loads, maybe I'll try what Federal has.

I'm a little sceptical about that. These bullets are truly overkill for deer sized game and really are what good bullet performance if based off !
