So many of you know I got that surprise Christmas divorce in 2017 and got the house for two years (I'm STILL grateful and appreciative of all you guys did to come together to pull my ass out of the fire, you have no idea). Well, I've been saving (for a down payment I won't be needing) and it's been over one year now and I'm looking for something. Not much available in WA unless you've got $500,000+ for the most basic of house that isn't a shithole. But in economically depressed Aberdeen, prices are totally different. It's a very unique area regarding housing prices. Now I'm disabled and my buddy is gonna drive trucks so work in that area isn't a problem. Trips to Seattle for doctor appt.'s will suck but I know a guy that goes through worse and maybe it won't be all that bad.

Anyway, what's there to do there? Any long ranges? Open land you can just go shoot at? What about .50BMG and 1 mile+ ranges or just a good open spot where you can shoot that far? I really need some advice about the area from some folks who live/have lived there. I also may start a little firearms business but that's neither here nor there at the moment. I just wanna know what I can about the are and what options there are regarding long range shooting.

If land is cheap enough, I'm cool with forming some kind of group, maybe start a shooting club, where we all pay membership dues which are used to maintain and pay for the range. Nothing fancy, just simple and safe. If there's enough guys in the general area maybe this can work, founding our own shooting club with our own rules. I'm optimistic I guess and I feel that if we pooled our money towards needed resources like this we'd be a LOT better off.

I don't have much choice. It's this or spend months and months looking for something that'll work, but won't be as new or in as good condition as these houses and likely need work and money invested to make it work. Some of these houses are among some of the best deals I found on average across the US --I'd be hard pressed to find a similar house in AL or TN for the same price. My limit I wanna spend is $200k but I'll go a little higher if it's something worth considering.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

And when I DO move, I'll be taking some of you up on those offers to help move! I could sure use it, it's just me with a trashed back, knees and feet and my old team mate, another vet who has a fucked up shoulder. Between the two of us I'm pretty sure you could assemble one man ready to go. But it don't work like that. So I'll be boxing up as much as possible prior, the really heavy shit will be moved by safe movers, and and I'll grill out burgers, steaks, whatever you guys want, and I'll get some good beers and I may even raffle off or otherwise do a drawing for some small prize just as an added thank you. I'll try to make whatever it is something nice, something useful, maybe ammo? I just really wanna show my appreciation and thanks towards anyone who answers the call. I don't want anyone out money, so if you were to bring sleeping bags or blankets, I have a couple air mattresses and an empty room for guests. No need for a hotel unless you want it and I'm paying for all the food. In short, just bring gloves and your ass in gear and I'll take care of the rest!

As soon as I know though, have a date, could be weeks, could be up to 3 months I guess, I'll let you all know so we can coordinate and see what happens. Even if just a couple of you guys showed up it would be a tremendous help indeed. And there shouldn't be any reason anyone needs to fly in from across country (though you are most certainly welcome if you just want to!).

I would not setup shop along the coast there given all the increased volcanic and earthquake activity around the ring of fire.

Do you have to stay in Washington?

Sorta. I mean, it'd be a lot easier to stay here, for now anyway and regardless of where I move I'll be restricted either by cost or by area, then there's the problem of finding good doctors.

I actually took a physical geography class here about this region a while back. Cascadia slipped the last time on New Years 1700. The Japanese recorded the tsunami (those famous water colors? yeah, that tsunami). Here it reinforced and underlined the myth of the "Thunderbird". Anyway, all but the most outlier models show that a barrier between the sea and the mainland will all but snuff out a tsunami. Even the ones that can get through don't cause near as much damage and then I won't be THAT close to the water and certainly not on the ocean side. I'm at more risk now given my proximity to Rainier and moving closer to Helens isn't that big of a deal, it DID start rebuilding it's cone but hell, I kinda expected that, but I doubt it'll have another signficant pyroclastic eruption for a loooong time, if ever again. Earthquakes? Best I can do is try and stay off known faults and follow good earthquake preppping techniques like bolting/tying shit down, fire prevention, etc.

I live in Raymond, about 25 minutes south of Aberdeen and travel up there every once and a while. Quick trips to Home Depot or bimart. I worked in Aberdeen a long time ago and hung out up there as a kid every so often.
Everything for housing in Aberdeen is cheap if you stay in town ( not a personal recommendation of mine). If you get out of town prices start going up.
Then there is the druggies and homeless camps along the Chehalis river. They are working to clean them up but it been slow and looks like tent city.
Work in that area is good, lots of log truck company’s in that town. There is also a garbage company which I worked for for 12 years just out side of town. They are usually hiring for drivers. Even down where I live there is decent jobs with trucking outfits. Weyerhaeuser logging is always hire drivers also.
Shooting area is kinda limited because of the timber company’s around there as well as where I live. Most of the area is locked up and requires you to by an access permit which allows no target shooting.
Just east outside of Raymond there is a range that is good for 500m.
If you do find a place and give me a date I sure I could make some time to come up and give you a hand. Got some busy weekends the next couple months but could make time. If you have anymore questions let me know. I will try to help ya out with what I know about the area best I can.

PacNor is a communist hippy hellhole imho.

    Hi,

LOL and so is the "New College" and the Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota.
Along with all the other hippy communities in Treasure Island, Gulfport, etc etc.
So your area of Florida is not much better :)

    Sincerely,
    Theis

I live a ways north of Aberdeen but visit friends in the area regularly.
Aberdeen May be the right choice for you, but I would suggest looking at north west Washington. From Mount Vernon north to the Canadian border. There are still some small towns where prices are halfway reasonable, and crime/traffic are much less than Aberdeen.

Head to Cosmopolis or maybe Montesano. I would never live in down town Aberdeen. It’s just a depressing place. Hence the reason housing is so cheap. Everywhere you look there as far as houses go they are dumps. lots of crack houses, crime is high, just not an appealing place. Correct me if I’m wrong 1j but I believe a while back I even herd there was a statement for tourist to avoid the area.

I fucking hate when my wife says I’m just going to run to Walmart in aberdeen. I have to go then, and we both carry our pistols there. Herd of several attempted kidnapping at that place. My blood pressure is through the roof when I’m there.

@Mooseknuckles I'm not certain about the advisory in Grays Harbor, but I sure as hell wouldn't doubt it. It is a depressing, and becoming an ever increasing dangerous place to be. Zombies everywhere and just a run down shithole.

@el-wood The Bremerton area use to be decent, don't really know anymore. I gotta Sister up in Silverdale, nice area there. I think Moose is on to something though regarding Montenaso or Cosmopolis.

Hell, you are are looking for damn nice houses, and land for cheap, the UP of michigan is the answer. The downside is, LONG motherfucking winters and deep motherfucking snow. But with the right equipment and mindset, it’s doable. And on a lake? Aint no place prettier. The cold and snow does keep the riff raff out. For 200k you’d be living like a genuine fat cat.
Divorced...the great thing is (speaking from experience) uprooting is so much easier. I’m looking at retirement in the next few years...and i am in the process of figuring out where i am going. And i am NOT limiting myself to this place. States with no income tax are high on my list. In fact, i think i have it narrowed down to 2....maybe a 3rd option being alaska.

House shopping has given me a list of things I want to consider before moving to a new area. Some of the items on this list may help you with your decision regarding where to move:

    1. Housing prices per sq/ft
    2. Overall tax burden
    3. access to medical care (how far to my doctors, hospital, VA facility, specialists)
    4. food delivery (are there either restaurants, or stores that can deliver if something goes
wrong and I can't get out to the store (for example of my back goes out)
    5. demographics: does the education level, and ethnic make up of the community suit me?
    6. how far to a decent place to shoot
    7. overall crime rate: are there lots of meth heads, property crimes, homeless camps etc
    8. how close is the house to cell towers or electric line transmission towers
    9. How close are schools: having schools too close, or too far can be a nuisance
    10. transportation: is there either mass transit, uber, or some way to get around if you can't
    drive.
    11. police response time. What is the average response time? Is it city or county that would
respond? (also consider fire and emergency medical service response time)
    12. jobs. If you are going to seek employment, is there anything in the area that you can use?
    13. social support network: How far away are you from friends, family, etc, or does that even
matter? If you make friends easily, it may not be a factor.
    14. buying stuff: will you have to pay to have most of the stuff you buy shipped in, or are there
some stores nearby that have what you will need. Shipping adds up after a while.
    15. location: is the climate, safety from fire, flood, earthquake acceptable? If there is a disaster
would it be difficult for aid to get to your community?

When I start looking at some where to live, the price of the house is only the starting point. After considering all these things, I have rejected a number of areas. Virginia looked really good for many of the considerations, but Virginia's slide into an anti-gun, uber liberal state caused both wife and I to reject that state from consideration.

This is mostly true! If you take King, Pierce and Thurston county out of the equation then it would be a decent state.
Yes, unfortunately, like many other places, the urban areas are ruining it for everyone by trampling on individual rights. Pacific Northwest was beautiful and used to be a great place until the Kalifornia Commies started taking over the political machine there.

    Agree a 100% with ya.
Oregon is a prefect example also. Portland is a shithole I will not go to anymore.
Really liked going there for the brewery and food down town but won’t anymore.

I fish out of westport in the summer and frequent aberdeen, or as its lovingly referred to as Scab'rdeen. It's a meth hole, and westport is slightly better. If you like fishing or hunting the Oly Peninsula offers a lot. Lots of woods to shoot in and great fishing in the summer and hunting in the fall.

☝ This all day long. I know you're in Clallam County. I grew up in Sekiu, graduated from Clallam Bay. Lived in Neah Bay for a year before moving to Sekiu. The Port Angeles, Sequim area would not be a bad choice whatsoever.
