Rifle Scopes finding the right scope

Im new to LRS & I have allways used low power v3 leoupld scopes & they have worked well for hunting, but I have found my eyes need more magnification at longer ranges, & Im gonna buy a new scope, after much reading here & elswhere Im thinking about a NF but being new to LRS & not having one to look through, which one should I get? , a 5.5-22x 56 or a 8-32 x56? & either mil dot or npr2? I live in mtns of NW MT & shooting ridge to ridge can be as far as you care to shoot, the paticular ridge I hunt most often is about 800 yrds away , this scope? or should I be looking at another , or waiting for a little while for the new NF my present scope will do for this season if need be , I only want to buy once if possible thanks for any responces

Have you decided on staying with SFP or are you wanting a FFP scope?

What is your overall budget?

I'll add that as you're wanting to use it for hunting, I'd rather have a little left on the bottom end than massive magnification on the top. 22x will EASILY handle anything inside 1k yds.

I think with any mil-dot or mil based scope it's imperative to use FFP in order to use the reticle properly.

Simply because the subtentions stay the same on any mag.

Take for instance the Vortex Viper 6.5-20. The subtentions are only accurate on 14X ( I believe ). So if that the case why not just buy a fixed magnification optic.
I'm not discounting Vortex by any means. Hope no one takes that the wrong way.

I know if you have shot SFP it is completely alien at the start. But IMO FFP is the only way to go when using a mil reticle.

FFP limits magnification choices , as far as I can tell , I was looking to spend around 2k , I looked at USO but are they really 1k better than NF? if so Im all ears,I only want to cry once- I dont know thats why Im asking hoping someone with exsperince will shed some light on best value for $, this is a big amount of $ for me, to some it may not be, but I really need to get it right 1st time, Ive heard good reports on several scopes , & I really like way my Lupy's allways worked but there not much cheaper if any, for features I think I need, I have a cheap SFP 6-24x Mildot now mils only correct on 8x guess it would be nice to FFP but then your limited on power 15x top right?

You don't need a 22x scope to shoot 800 yards. The higher the magnification, the better quality the optics will have to be in order to be able to use the magnification. If you want to properly use 22x, you will be limiting yourself to premium (and premium priced) optics.

after looking at links on your post I see lot of FFP scopes with higher magnification SS 5-20 FFP , Leoplold has a few but I dont care for their Mil dot reticle, I guess I need to do a lot more google fu, any favorite scopes & why would be appreciated, thanks, Mike

saw some pics of PST & NF FFP compared side by side at 1000 yrds I love the NF mildot reticle ,... does anyone have any actual pics of lupys mildot reticle ? surley it isnt the big thick blocky one they show an illistration of on their web page, but they are FFP with higher magnification, thanks Mike

both the NF 8-32x & 5.5- 22x 2nd focal plane mil dot scopes the mills are correct at 22x that means you would have to go to 22x to use mil dot for ranging, for hunting that would be ok
, if its far enough away to have need to range it, you got time, if its close, no need to range, F1 is definately better, just wish NF had higher X F1 or Lupy or any other high X had NF mildot reticle, so many choices

finally quit looking for right scope,Im gonna try 8-32 NF mil mil hs zs , just bought from another member, looking foward to ,shooting my 300 WM with a quality scope
