Firearm Transfer Question (FFL's please read)

Gent's,

I've sold several firearms over the years to individuals out of my home state. I always request their FFL information which is verified prior to shipping. Funds received, firearm w/bill of sale (my info, buyer info, and dealer info) shipped, done deal.

I'm in the process of shipping a rifle later this week and for the first time - the seller indicated his FFL wants a photo copy of my driver license to complete the transaction - WTF? Is this a new policy for selling & shipping a firearm out of state?

My concern is my identity - all personal information (with the exception of my SSN) getting out of my hands. Please advise if this is potentially problematic if I do or do not send it.

I've never had anyone request anything like that but I've only done it twice so...

Ive had every FFL that I have sent a firearm to out of state request this and the half dozen or so that I have used here to receive firearms for me have asked for the same from the seller (non FFL's). Maybe I am naive, but it doesnt bother me.

I have purchased firearms within my home state and the ffl/gun store make a copy of my license (don't know why since I am a resident). If its a pawn shop receiving the rifle for transfer some state laws require that they keep a record of transactions, which includes the sellers info (license) along with the buyers. I have only encountered a license request (when I sold a rifle online) when the receiving ffl was a pawn shop. It could be just another way for the ffl/shop to cover their ass.

Interesting...like I indicated this is the 1st time a copy of my DL is requested. However, it sounds like standard procedure from your experience's. I just wanted to make sure this wasn't out of the norm - I feel better.

If you don't want to comply... Take the weapon to a local FFL. They can log it in/out and include their info and your out of the loop.

Most that I have dealt with that want this, is just a confirmation of the photo id and name, address, etc of the individual that sent them the weapon for their records (they need that info to log it into their books). Instead of sending a weapon and making up some random info.....It is just a simple confirmation. Not a big deal really and I don't ever see anyone doing any more with your info.

The ones that I have purchased and transferred to my dealer, he usually passes the copy of the DL in the box, case to me and I just shred it.

Your DL number and address isn't that private anyway. There are any number of databases one can purchase that info from. I's guess a couple of the tech savvy guys on here could get it in fifteen minutes or less.

And that is just the non LEO's, LEO guys can get it even quicker.

Bottom line, wouldn't sweat it.

Ha! You should be so lucky... try buying a rifle in Cali... DL#, SSN, life history, blood sample, testicular x-ray, prostate exam, Lo-jack chip implant, sensitivity training, and political oaths. You only cry the first 3 or 4 times...

divers license copy is just a way for the FFL to log it in since you are not a registered FFL. i wouldnt supply my SSN for that though

I am guessing that it is Kalifornia. I am trying to get a lower right now and every place here local is going to run me about $100 on top of the purchase price for transfer fee, DROS, and tax. Yes they all want a driver license from the seller to prove it is not a "retail" sale. Sucks.
