First 10/22

I bought a plain jane 10/22 this week and a good friend and I blew through 500rnds over the last couple days. Its been fun but what kind of groupings should we be getting at 60 yards with cheap 525 box ammo?

It seems like the best we can get is 1-1.5" on 5-10 shots. That seems really big to me considering we were pretty good shooters in the military. I think it has something to do with the gun being so short at the ass end. It like we can get our positioning the same every time we shoot.

Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

That's about the accuracy you are going to get with the original unmodified barrel with cheap bulk ammo. I am assuming that if you are using a scope that it will hold zero. If you want the gun to shoot better then you will need to look at 3 main areas to start with:

1) barrel: Get a match barrel or just about any aftermarket barrel will be better than stock barrel--stock barrel has a sporter chamber which is very reliable but not so good for absolute accuracy.
2) ammo: Get better ammo than cheap bulk ammo but especially find ammo that matches your gun's setup. The only way to find ammo that your gun setup likes is to actually try out the ammo and shoot it in your gun.
3) bedding: Bedding is very important since I have seen a lot of people spending hundreds even thousands into their 10/22 but they still only use 1 action screw with no real way to stabilize the receiver or barrel in the stock. And they wonder why their 10/22 doesn't perform as well as is should All 3 of my 10/22s have 100% free floated barrels and they are all epoxy bedded with a rear anchor point. After finding the right ammo my 10/22s shoot in the 3s at 50m (0.3xxin at 50m).

Well 1 and 2 make sense but I have to ask what is bedding? I see it on here a lot and I have no idea what it is.

Ok that makes sense.

I am looking at Zero Shark stock (may go with a Tact Sol) and new bull barrel as we speak. I really like the idea of a cheap fun toy instead of spending $1/rnd in my Grendel.

I actually don't mind my factory barrel. I was getting about the same as you before i replaced the stock with a Boyd's laminate that I bought here. I haven't gotten around to bedding it yet, but I've seen improvement. I plan to do something about my trigger before I mess with the barrel. I can't say that I love the factory trigger much.
Here's a quick breakdown of the readily available ammo in mine-
5 shot groups first:
Winchester 525 (and the other boxes like it)- 3/4-1" with an occasional flyer
American eagle- 1-1 1/4"
Fiocchi- 1/2"
Cci mini mag- 1/2- 3/4"
Cci standard velocity- 1"
Thunderbolts- I don't wanna talk about it- gun hates them

10 shots:
525's- 1 3/4" (main groups of 1" with a few flyers)
American eagle- 1 3/4"
Fiocchi- 1 1/4"
Mini mags- 1"
Standard velocity- 1 3/4" with vertical stringing

I'd be interested in seeing how yours does with some of these

While I agree that bedding is valuable, I think some trigger work would be in order before I spend $$ on bedding.

As long as the trigger breaks consistently then it should not matter too much as to the weight. Unless the trigger is horrendously bad, I see greater gains with better bedding than with a better lighter trigger. I have seen shooters with heavier 3 lb. triggers shoot tighter smaller groups than other shooters with 8 oz. triggers. Its all in the trigger manipulation. A lot of people go to lighter triggers to try to fix their rifle accuracy problem when in fact their problem is poor trigger control.

Once again as long as the trigger is decent 2-3 lbs. and breaks cleanly and consistently, then do the bedding first. You will see greater accuracy gains there especially with the 10/22 platform.

Yes. Most target and match ammo are subsonic.

You can go crazy and buy and shoot Eley Tenex, Lapua X-Act, RWS R-50, or Federal UltraMatch for the ultimate in accuracy and consistency (by the way you still need to match the bullet lot to your rifle through testing) or you can come back down to Earth and shoot what some consider the best value for your money: Wolf or SK. SK Std + = Wolf Match Target, SK Rifle Match = Wolf Match Extra. My 10/22s shoot in the 3's and once in a while in the 2's with SK Rifle Match. I would start with Wolf or SK. If they don't work well there is a host of different medium grade 22 ammo (all less than $10 for a box of 50) that is plenty accurate for the majority of shooters--just not serious benchrest shooters.

I have two 10/22 rifles. One is in a Nordic Component AR chassis kit and the other is in a Bell and Carlson A-5 type stock. Both have heavy match barrels.

Today I took them both out to the range to shoot. The one in the BC stock has a Bushnell 3 X 12 scope and today I shot several groups with Federal gold medal and ELEY TENX ammo. Both ammo I was able to shoot 10 shots in a 1/2 group. The 10/22's are just fun to shoot.

If you want to improve accuracy from a 10/22 start with a M.O.A. corp. stainless receiver. Two big advantages of this one is a threaded barrel set up and most importantly the receiver has a rear tang for a rear action screw. That way you can and should float the barrel.

Every 22 I have ever owned has loved Winchester 40gr subsonic. $3.99/box. Everything from a $200 10/22 to a $1500 Volquartsen in rifles and various 22/45's with and without the Tac Sol upper in pistols, has made nice little groups with the stuff. It also kills varmits DRT.

I run a 10/22 with Adams & Bennett bull barrel. I get around 1"-1.5" groups at 50 yards. Not real pleased with that. Will be changing barrels.

So I am going to get my barrel and stock shortly(thought I was already going to have it) and I was wondering if I will need to cange my stock scope rail for a 20-30 moa? I am going to start training at 200-300 yards so I can shoot 1000 yards this fall with the Grendel.

Depends on the scope and the amount of barrel droop you get with your setup. If you will shoot exclusively at 2-300 yards then by all means get the 30moa scope rail otherwise the 20moa or 25moa scope rail will do nicely.
