hey guys,
i am sorry for my english but i am from germany. i am new to this community and wanted to ask you some questions. right now i am planning my first custom rifle. which custom systems would you recommend? i don`t know if all of them are available in germany. what do you think about barnard systems? weapon will be a repeater in 260 Rem. or 6.5x47 Lapua. i am thinking about a mcmillan stock (a5). options are manners or wilddog. the rifle will be used for hunting and tactical shooting. please tell me what you think about stocks, systems, barrels and finishes because i am absolutely new to these things...

so I truly understand.

You can also look at a TRG-22 or an Accuracy International as I know they are easy to get in Europe and are great rifles. Not to mention the best scopes are using European glass so I am kind of envious there.

Try this link for searching the Hide: It is an easier search function.

Roedale is a great place to start and I am sure you can do a search on this site and find someone in Eurpoe running one.

Good luck with the search as that is the great bot of the fun of shooting. The sport is addictive so watch out and hold on to your wallet.

Re: First Custom Rifle

i know pete from roedale precision and i own one of his rifles. but it wasn`t build for me. i bought it used from another guy. now i`m planning my own rifle. maybe pete will build it but i consider another gunsmith as well.
i need no adresses in europe, i need information on parts. which action would you use? as i said i`m thinking about a barnard action. would you use a manners or a mcmillan stock? which model is your favorite? does anybody have a wilddog stock? what are your experiences?

Re: First Custom Rifle

I could get a Tikka T3 without any problem. And the Tikka Varmint is available in 260 Rem. But they are much more expensive than they are in the USA. I already have a Tikka Tactical in 308 Win. and it is a great gun. But I don`t like all the plastic. The stocks are very bad, too. Which stock would you recommend for a Tikka? I think a new Tikka Varmint is around 1100€ or 1200€ over here. But the advantage is that it is available in 260 Rem. (or 6.5x55). A Remington would need a new barrel. One other alternative is a Howa. In my opinion it is better than the Remington. Howa is a bit cheaper, too. But in general rifles are very expensive in Germany. A custom action would be an alternative. I thought about Surgeon, Lawton, Barnard or Pete`s new Avenger 2. Please let me know what you think (if you can understand my English).

Re: First Custom Rifle

I'm partial to the Surgeon 591 as far a custom actions in short action length. The Surgeon bottom metal is good too.

Manners and McMillan are both inletting for Tikka now I think.

Any time you buy a factory gun it's a crap shoot as to whether it's going to be sub MOA or not.So it's an opportunity to get a premium barrel and reputable gunsmith to.

Thank you Steve!
Would you choose a McMillan or a Manners stock? I consider an A-5, an A3-5 or a Manners T4A (or T5?). What are your experiences with these stocks?

Re: First Custom Rifle

While I'm honestly not familiar with any custom actions, your thinking appears to be both clear and sound in all respects.

Since you're in Europe, I would consider your priorities to be different from those those which should be primary here in the USA.

I'm unfamiliar with the 6.5x47 Laupa, but since .260 brass can be obtained from Remington, Winchester makes .243 and 7-08, and Lapua makes .243; I would think that having alternatives that can be used as-is, or made into .260 brass would be a capability that has advantages.

My experience is with mcMillan, I like the two I've obtained, and I've heard good things about Manners, too.

For shooting off a rest, I like the McM A3. For hand carrying for long periods, I like the A5's forend better. The hook style lower butt profile suits my personal rear bag/prone shooting style quite well.

I don't own either stock.I think they are on par with each other as far as quality. One thing I feel strongly about these days is overall weight of the rifle. If you pick a medium weight barrel and a lighter stock you would be well served. It would be light enough to hunt with and would be suitable for competition too.

I forgot to mention these guys. They have a titanium action out.I had the opportunity to fondle their rifles at the Shot Show and was quite impressed!

Re: First Custom Rifle

Thanks again guys!
Am I right that only the Manners T4 is available for the Tikka at the moment? Is it possible to get a Manners T4A with the adjustable cheekpiece for the Tikka? Man I want to live in the USA!:) All those things are very expensive and difficult to get in Germany/Europe...

No need to apologise for your English. It is better than that of many Americans I have seen post here.
Welcome to the Hide!

Re: First Custom Rifle

I have several rifles with McMillan A5s, but recently acquired another rifle that has a Manners T4A. The feel, fit, and finish of the Manners stock is very good.
