First day of new gun law leads to arrest

From the article:
The customer making demands for ID pulled his firearm from its holster but never pointed it at the other customer, who said he was not obligated to show any permits or identification.

He demanded the man’s ID again. Undeterred by the drawn gun, the man paid for his items, left the store and called for police.

I only see one idiot, and that is the moron playing Barney Fife and asking for ID....WTF. What about the man going on about his business makes you say that he is also an idiot?

Well actually, it seems that only the one guy was an idiot. The second guy was smart enough to not respond and leave the scene. However, I'm not a fan of people open carrying in public places, even if it is legal. Just my opinion.

EDIT: I guess that I took too long to post. Oh, well.

If the guy going on about his business is not an idiot He is one hell of a lot smarter than I am. If some one pulled a gun on me, I would have a real hard time turning my back on him to pay a cashier then walk away. I would feel that by pulling a gun on me guy number one was threatening me with deadly force. You can say that the guy who turned his back and walked away was not harmed, but he could have been.

Are You really telling me that when someone pulls a gun on you, the best option is to walk away? I guess in this case you would have been right, thus I hold out the possibility that this man may have been much smarter than I am. Once the other guy pulled his gun, I probably would have complied with his order to show my ID, then if possible called the police.

The guy who walked away was there. You and I were not. As such, he had the ability to read body language/non verbal cues coming from dipshit with a pistol. Whether he did so and called dipshit's bluff or simply lucked out we will never know.

To answer your question, yes, sometimes the best defense against someone drawing down on you is to disengage and escape. Maybe even without drawing or firing back. Exactly what that situation would be, I couldn't tell you in advance. All this shit is incredibly fluid and every situation is a world onto itself.

One thing is for sure. The guy who walked away won the confrontation without a ton of potential legal and financial hassle, which is always a real possibility when you draw your weapon in earnest, let alone fire it against an aggressor.

I agree with you on every point. Still it seems that my point has failed to come across clearly enough. Guy pulls a gun and asked to see my ID, fastest way to deescalate I can think of is to show him my ID. After I have deescalated, then I'll disengage, call the police and do what I can to have him arrested. I am glad It worked out OK in this case, and your are right I was not there and I know the story that makes it to the news is not always the way it went down. Still from the the way the story is written, it just does not sound like how I would have done it.

Now to be fair, unless I was hiking on private property, or hunting, or hiking in grizzly country I also would not open carry.

Perhaps he simply panicked and going about his business was simply how he responded to being scared shitless. Just a thought.

I wonder if Mr Megadouche ShowmeID flashed one of these:

ETA these kind of badges are the gayest thing I've ever seen
