What's up Hide. Back in December I picked up a brand new R700 XCR Compact Tactical in .308. I ordered the Vortex PST 6-24 FFP MRAD from Optics Planet for $850. I was immediately notified it was on back order and since then I've been doing nothing but waiting and getting my delivery date pushed out further. I don't mind waiting a little while to get the exact scope I want but I have no idea if I'm weeks or months from taking delivery at this point. I want to get my rifle on the range already.

This is my first bolt gun and will be my first real attempt at long distance shooting. It will start mostly as a range toy out to 400 yards but I would like the capability to reach out up to maybe 1000 yards if/when I get the opportunity to do so. I plan on taking some sort of sniper/distance shooting course down the road and want this rifle to be able to do its part.

I feel like the PST is probably the best bang for the buck and I know I locked in a good price on it but availability is making that less and less appealing as my new R700 has been sitting in my gun safe unfired for over three months now.

My question is what other scopes should I be looking at as possible alternatives to the PST? What would you do? Wait for the PST or get something else?

Sent him a message...none in stock. Thanks anyway for the link.

I'm going to suggest something unorthodox; a starter scope; to get that rifle out of the closet and onto the range.

For under $100, the Tasco 6-24x42 Varmint/Target Mildot scope will serve at least well enough to get you up and running. Once the Vortex arrives, swap it out and hold onto the Tasco as a standby/backup scope. It will also serve rather well as a 'hot spare' on a .22 trainer once its initial role is done.

Tasco Model number VAR624X42M.

Not a bad suggestion at all Greg. I probably would've done that a lot sooner if I didn't have other guns to keep me busy.

I just got an updated ship date of 3/16 for the PST so I think I'll wait it out til then before I do anything. Hopefully Vortex makes good on this one!

Re: First long range gun...waiting for my PST

Optics Planet is getting my new 4-16 PST FFP in 4 days from the day I ordered it. My code of THEHIDE saved me 5% which ended up at about 850. Now I have to wait 11 more weeks for my stock from Manners. Kind of in the same boat.
