First range report with the AIAW 338Lapua

Guys,

Had my first range trip with my AIAW in 338Lapua. I bought a scope mount with unknown MOA. I think it is forward sloping in the range of 28MOA. I will see where the crosshairs are at in the scope. The scope is a Nightforce 5.5-22X56MM. I have it hitting about 3" low at 100. I got tired after 31 rounds. Started flinching at about round 20. It is very manageable, but will put the hurtin' on ya quick.
Good news is that I am on paper, and can go from there. My load is with Lapua brass, and 300GR Lapua bullets, and H-1000 powder.
Next trip I'll bring the chronograph.

The last 5 rounds are about 1" from outside to outside.

I need to shoot this beast more to get comfortable with it. It is my first AI, and lovin it so far!

I have not fired an AI 338, but I owned a Desert Tac SRS with a 338 barrel and their brake. It honestly was no less comfortable to shoot than my 308s without a brake. Never noticed it becoming uncomfortable, but I dont think I ever fired more than about 60-70 rounds in a sitting.

Not because of the recoil, but the cost, LOL.

338LM is a wicked bad round, and the AI's are awesome platforms (assuming you like the stock) but I found that since 99% of my shooting is <700 yards, that I was wasting powder. I am sticking to 308 for now.

My suppressed TRG 42 338LM was a pleasure to shoot, about on par with my 308 without suppressor

i believe the brake silver bullet has on his aw is not the magnum version. just from my own speculation, the DTA brake and the AW magnum brake look similar so im guessing they would both reduce recoil considerably more than the brake on silverbullets aw.

You need the new AI muzzle brake. It will make a difference.

1000+. My 338LM with the new brake has very manageable recoil. I can shoot all day, but my wallet won't let me do that. LOL. Would suggest contact Stacey Blankenship or John at SRT for advice on the new double port brake. Your should will appreciate you more.

I think it is the stock AI brake. It is not recoiling too much, but this is my first 338 Lapua. I just got tired from working all day, and then to the range. Here is a pic of just the brake.

I bet the Lapua 250 gr bullets would help too. I haven't shot too much rifle this year. But all that will change now!

I don't have van AW, but I'm pretty sure that's not the SM break.

agreed that doe not look like an AI brake. The 338 AWM was one of the more recent calibers relesed by them wasnt it?

Your barrel behind the brake even look slike it was turned down from the factory for the other factory AW brake.

I too think the newer brake it will make a difference. I have never shot the 338 AW, but the .300WM I had was not uncomfortable at all with the AW brake.

That does not look like the AIAW brakes I have seen...the AI have more ports...3 I think...and taper the outer size down towards the outlet...IIRC

That is the AI brakes I have seen...I would love to get you out to an SHWW event with that pig!!!

^^ ditto the above comments on the brake. I ran a similar style AI brake on my 338LM, it wasn't very effective at taming recoil, of course I didn't know any different until I tried something else.

I would like to start shooting with the SHWW group, but wanted to get a little familiar with the AI so I don't look like a total tard.
What would you guys think of me changing to a surefire brake?
It would be a killer setup with the can!

The brake on Silverbullet-2's AI is the original design that came in on the the earliest AI Super Magnums when they were imported by Gunsite in AZ. AI improved the design resulting in less felt recoil.

Nice looking rig, I haven’t shot the A1, but just for some info to compare to my Barrett kicks about like a 20 ga shotgun – actually pretty easy for a 338 Lapua

As paulhig mentioned, that is the original SM muzzle brake, which is timed and locked into place. Not very comfortable to shoot I understand. AI offers the new magnum double chamber muzzle brake which is much more efficient and comfortable by FAR! We also offer a new double chamber brake only within the US as well. The original break weas used on the 308 & 300win mag.
the blast faces are very small.
The new break has large double blast faces & the difference in recoil reduction is a great improvement.

I have shot a AWSM in 338LM with the UK AI double chamber brake on it. I have a bad shoulder & it didn't hurt to shoot at all.
Was real impressed with the recoil reduction, kept me on target.

I normally shoot a 24" barrel AWP & the recoil seemed less with the 338LM due to the brake or maybe it was just me & my shoulder feeling better that day.

As soon as i save some money i'll be sending stacey my AWP for a brake install.

Stacey can provide the UK factory double chamber brake & also has the new U.S. double chamber brake. I'm sure you would be happy with either one versus the one you currently have. The new US one is supposed to be better from what i understand but won't accept back up iron sights like the UK version does.

Get in touch with stacey, he won't steer you wrong. Great person to deal with!

I was going to comment that looks like Snoqualmie Valley, I shoot out there sometimes too. I was out there the day after you doing some load development.

ROLEXrifleman, I'm watching you, LOL!!!! You wouldn't know what to do with a Howa if it came up and introduced itself!!! Let alone how to operate such a sophisticated piece there............

But seriously, the new QD break or the standard magnum muzzle brake is the way to go with the .338 especially. LMK if you would like assistance on reworking the barrel on the rifle, we will get you taken care of.

Yes , as has been mentoned already , its one of the earlier SMs , another give away is the plain barrel .

With the new brake , you will have no problems RE excessive recoil .

And if it has the std 18x1.5mm thread & spigot , then you only need to un screw the old and screw on the new ?
