wishing i was in KY
First, a big thanks to all the Hide folks! I have learned a ton just from reading on this site (for hours until I got w/ sideways looks from the wife...) Thanks to all for answering a lot of my questions, and especially all the advide in the "new guy" threads and fundamentals threads. I have been shooting rifles shotguns and pistols nearly since I could walk as a farm kid from Ky but when it comes to precision rifles specifically I knew I had a lot to learn and this is a great place to start. In fact, my entry rig here is based nearly entirely on what i have learned here with the obviously cash flow limitations...here it is though everyone prob knows what it looks like, all stock, no bedding or trigger jobs etc:

Well, finally got the base on the rifle after stripping a screw and finally took out my new rifle for the first time. Rem700 5r, Badger 20moa base, Loopy Mk4 4.5-14x50 TMR in Seekins rings. Harris 6-9 BRM-s with podloc and a BT04 monopod. Wasnt sure if I would like the monopod but after giving it a shot I love it.

Boresighted the old fashioned way and got it on paper with Winchester 150gr power points and shot my first group prone at home, 1.5 inches, not so good, but just a hasty test. Was a little worried about that. Got to the range the next day (yesterday) and shot from the bench. It was 75 degrees midday with some shifty spring winds. For some reason the target stand is 103 yards which I measured after shooting, didnt know that before hand. All groups are five shot groups. The first two are shown below. The upper group is FGMM 168SMKs, I removed the target repair dot for the picture. About an inch or so-an immediate improvement of course over the cheaper winchester ammo. I used this group to re-zero the scope and reset the elevation to 0. The one right below that is the second group, right on the bull. The "flyer" at 10 oclock and about 7/8in was the first shot, the next four were touch more or less at point of aim. Not sure about that first shot. I was fiddling around with the monopod and bipod between rounds and wasn't real consistent in my approach to the rifle and was hoping that would explain it.

So the third group was just like the second with four touching/overlapping except this time the fifth one was about an inch at 4 oclock. So another inch group basically. I was frustrated with one shot throwing the group out like that but I guess that is the value of the five shot group - you know have a real group with at least five. I figured if 4 will go together that fifth one is probably me but hard to say so I wont fool with 3 shot groups, another thing I picked up here. I made a mistake at this point and covered that group with a dot to conserve targets - sorry - and shot the fourth right on top of it. AGAIN four together and one at 6-630 oclock this time - the one at 3-4 oclock is from the third group, my mistake for overlapping like that.

Then I switched to the 175gr FGMM and really concentrated on a smooth trigger press and lightened my hold on the gun a little. Also waited two min between shots and switched to the paper target as I thought the shootncee target made it hard to see where the bull was. Below is the best group I have ever shot with any rifle, all 5 in one ragged hole:

I couldnt believe it when I saw this group. Unfortunately I had to leave and didnt get to follow up and try and get another one of those-arghhh really wanted to do that again. I really dont expect to get those all the time but I was pleased that this gun will shoot if i do my part and concentrate. I really want to nail down whether it was the switch to 175s from the 168s or if it was better concentration on the fundamentals on my part, maybe both. Trigger is ok and seems to be crisp and clean if a bit heavy, seems par for the course with the x-mark I guess according to what I have heard here. Oh, and did a track test with a special target I made with moa, mil and inch graduations (sorry no pics) and found out the scope does track true, is definetely tracking in 1/4 moa not 1/4IPHY. Didnt have timeto shoot the box since I had to leave but I am happy with it so far.
I can say one thing for sure though - I'm hooked! That last group felt like my first 25 straight on the skeet range! If it wasn't for this pesky mortgage....

Thats really good shooting man and I like the rifle. I can't wait to finish getting my 5r put together. I keep hearing good things about them which makes me happy. The one flyer could be you and your trigger. Post another test with the 168's just make sure you take your time and concentrate like you did with the 175's.

Re: First Range trip Rem 7005r with pics

Thanks fellas- I will try and get some better 168 groups this week. Maybe this barrel just likes 175s better, havent really shot it enough to know yet.
Eric good luck on your build! These rifles really seem to shoot for the money and so far I am really happy with this one. Post some pics of the rifle when you get it set up. I wasnt going to paint this one but some guys on this site have done some amazing work with krylon so I may give it a go sometime.

Re: First Range trip Rem 7005r with pics

Ky,
That's awesome. I posted my initial 5R range report a couple of weeks ago. Our equipment choices are pretty similar. I haven't tried anything other than 175 SMK's, but my 5R seems to really like them too. Also, I noticed the gun seems to shoot tiny groups once I have 10 shots or so down a clean bore. I've always cleaned my firearms after every trip to the range, but I'm re-thinking that approach. I going to wipe everything down from here on out, but I may leave the bore alone until my groups start to open up. Since my last cleaning/range report, I've shot 80 rounds. The first 10 shots on a clean barrel (two 5 shot groups) average about .95". However, the next 14 groups (5 shots at 100 yards) average about .6", with a couple in the .4" ballpark.

BTW, I'm still debating which rear rest to get. I think I'm going to order this:
http://www.skdtac.com/BALS_MK_2_Sniper_Bean_Bag_p/bal.602.htm

Which rear monopod are you using? Nevermind, I just re-read your initial post

Re: First Range trip Rem 7005r with pics

That bag looks like it would work, I like the extra insert for the higher cheek rest. I put a spacer under my stock pack to accomplish the same, since it was too low, even with the medium rings I have. Guess a 50mm is gonna be somewhat high but it works now. Check out Triads rear bags as well, they get good press here.
I went with the monopod even though I havent used that kind of rest before. I really liked the tiny adjustments I could make while on the bench and it was rock solid without me having to squeeze/apply pressure to it which was really nice. I havent shot with it much from the ground, and on a softer surface (like sand) I wonder, with the smaller footprint it has compared to a rear bag, if a rear bag wouldnt work better. On a hard surface I dont see how anything could be more solid than the accushot.

I hear you on the cleaning/accuracy. I am noticing the same thing. It just feels WRONG not to clean but it seems that some guys here with a lot more experience than me are saying the same thing so for now I am defering to them. If I several grand in a brand new GAP it would be even harder to put her away without cleaning!!!

Same equipment choices - great minds must think alike I guess! The truth is most of my setup is a result of reading reviews here and a couple other forums, which is why i like reading here.

Re: First Range trip Rem 7005r with pics

Put another box of 168s down range and these 4 groups averaged .6 inch, smallest was a half inch largest was .75 inch.

The average for all 175s so far is also right at that, so far it is .66 in. The difference is usually I have four of the 175s in a small ragged hole less than .5 in and one just off to the side opening up the group to .6-.7in, but the 168s seem to be distributed a little more randomly. I think this gun could be a consistent half inch gun with 175s, I already have a groupd smaller than that and am averaging .66 so I might not be shooting good enough to see the gun's best, or maybe it will always throw one out a little. Time will tell I guess.

Re: First Range trip Rem 7005r with pics

Matt, if you shoot your rifle uncleaned until the accuracy falls off, you will shoot a long time. My partner just broke in a new 5R. He shot and cleaned the first few rounds, then shot a little over 400 without cleaning. No change. He cleaned it anyway after the last match. These guns do not foul enough to worry about. Just clean the bolt evry now and then.

Re: First Range trip Rem 7005r with pics

Thanks Rob, that's what I'm doing then. Feels kind of lazy but sure is nice to wipe off some fingerprints and just put her away and DONE.

BTW used to drive past Tifton all the time on the way up from Moody down in Valdosta up to KY. Nice area.

Re: First Range trip Rem 7005r with pics

good shooting KY

i'm having a 5R built right now and am seriously considering a 22" barrel as i have no .308 load that needs 26".......does anyone see anything fundamentally wrong with this approach.

I have asked my smith, hart, lilga and bartlein and they all seem to agree, without provocation

i value your opinions and want to know what they are on the 22" 5R barrel with the 11.25 twist......barrel will be put on a 700 SA C prefix blueprinted, seekins dms, hs 700 p stock and will be threaded for a brake/can at a later time.

thanks, matt

Re: First Range trip Rem 7005r with pics

ugadeer,

I am definetely the wrong guy to ask about the 22 inch barrel but I do feel like you wont have any problem with it since there are lots of guys doing good work with the 20 inch LTRs. Do you shoot 155s? The stock Remington 5r I have is is a 24inch barrel 11.25in twist- is that what you are building or are you talking about a Mike Rock barrel? Anyway, try throwing your question out in the Rifles forum and see who chimes in, will probably get lots of good opinions. Sounds like you are going to have a great set up -congrats! The detachable mag will be nice.

Re: First Range trip Rem 7005r with pics

mine will either have a Mike rock or a hart barrel.....as lilga won't do .25 twists and Bartlein has a 6 month wait.......i will probably toss it out in rifles and see....i'll be shooting 165's and 175's only.......they both love my 12 twist remington VTR so i'm hoping that the 11.25 will be even better

Re: First Range trip Rem 7005r with pics

hey ky, go ahead and paint that thing. i also have a 5-r and i am very ocd about my guns and i painted mine. which for me really needed to be done any way to hide the stainless, but it looks killer. i didnt do a great job on it but it works. getting ready to do it again. it is addicting. it took a while for me to do it but i dont regret it.

Re: First Range trip Rem 7005r with pics

Haha - have been thinking about painting matter of fact. Several good threads here about painting. I'll do it sometime but my short list right now includes getting a handload worked up. I'd like to find a good dealon Lapua or Win brass based on what I've heard about Federal brass.
I have some BR2s, Varget and 175smks inbound, and am trying to get Forster press and accessories to set up. SAves money in the long run but the set up is some coin! So for now I am just shooting factory ammo.
