First Rifle, Are my choices ok?

Been mostly lurking here for awhile and have decided to build my first rifle. I have SPS in 22-250 that I am going to rebarrel in .260. I am ordering a Bartlein 27" Remington Varmint contour. Putting it in HS Proseries 2000 stock with a Jewell trigger. S&S Precision Rifles in Argyle, Tx will be doing the work. I have a Leupold VXIII 4.5-14x50, but I am also thinking about buying another Vortex Viper 6.5-24x50. The rifle will be used for hunting and targets hopefully out 1000yds. someday. Any input on my choices would be appreciated.

That should work, have you considered the 6.5 Creedmoor instead?

Unless you are determined to get an HS Precision stock, maybe have a look at Manners stocks with the chassis system: More options; better cheek pieces.

got to echo R. Walters and others on the stock choice. I have had several H&S Precision stocks and I just didn't like the palm swell on them. If you have one and you like it then by all means run it but there are much better stocks out there.

This. If nothing else run a factory R700 trigger and put the money for the jewel towards a nicer stock or chassis. The HS's aren't bad stock but with a custom tube unless you spend more to bed it then you will have a weak point in the system.

I'd also pony up a few more bucks for a Bushnell Elite tactical 3-12 or 6-24. They're night and day in quality and performance to the vipers.

I was going to tell him that but he sounded set on the H-S, my next Manners is the T2, think I'll like it better than my T4, and that's awesome.

Thanks for the replies. I am not set on anything, thats why I am asking before starting to order parts. I am going to check out Tumbleweeds as he is only about 50 miles from me. Thanks again for the help and keep it coming.

What others have mentioned is good info. Also I would steer away from the Vortex Viper 6.5-24. Reason I say this is they image on highest magnification gets really dark. The scope seems to have a dark image while looking through it as it is. The Leupold might be better but I would look at the PST class of scopes or SWFA maybe. As for your rifle build do you plan on leaving the barrel at 27"? If yes you might want to get that cut down to a about 24".

Vortex Razor HD 5-20 with 10mil turrets and EBR-2B reticle is greay for hunting and F class shooting. Lifetime no fault warranty, but fortunately I have never had to use. Easy zero stop adjustment.

While i dont disagree about the bedding, his rifle is more likely to shoot better in an unbedded HS or b&c stock than an unbedded manners or mcmillan. Also, pillar bedding one of these is going to cost much more than skim bedding the HS.

After shooting my Longrifles Inc. build, (no Im not going to post any pics unless Darrel wants to see, lol) for a year now, Im in very much LIKE with the T4 manners on that rifle, when I shoot my H-S stocked rifles they are very nice, but not a Manners, but to have the Manners inletted and pillar bedded will run you $310 if I remember the invoice from Chad correctly. That being said, I've got some .5moa groups out to 600yds with unbedded H-S stocks on factory REM rifles. If this rifle will be used just for informal longrange shooting get the H-S stock of your choice, DEFINITELY get the Jewell, if you get into any type of comps I'd opt to get the Manners with a heavier barrel. This is my FAV H-S stock, the M24 Police model. It's unbedded and the rifle is very accurate for a factory rig.

I would also consider the cheaper option and get a Mcree chassis, I think for the money it's hard to beat especially if you want a dbm setup.

Nothing wrong with Leupold. I got the MK4 and MK6
Timney triggers in both. I've had Jewell triggers not sure they are worth the extra coin (to me , anyway)
