Im not really into head/shoulder mounts, so when i bagged this one last fall, i decided to try a european/ western skull mount. I made the base and stand, as i wanted it on my shelf. I screwed up on the antlers. I tried doing a bleach on the skull and the base of the antlers fell into the the solution. You can see where the bases are slightly discolored. It actually turned them white.and i used some minwax stain lol. to get them back close. all in all it turned out ok. Any tips if i do another one ? Is there a right way to bleach a skull. So i dont screw another one up.

Re: First Skull Mount Buck !!

My dad has done this for years. Large longhorn steers, hog heads, deer heads and everything else. He has a large tank with bleach and suspends the skull by wire. Sets the wire up where only the skull is in the bleach. May take an extra 10 minutes to get the wire set to hold it the right height but it works. He usually has 4-5 in there at a time. He had to work at it to get it right too. Looks good like you have it.

Re: First Skull Mount Buck !!

Don't use bleach. It degrades the integrity of the bone. Sure, it will make it look ok...but eventually, the bone will become brittle and flake.

A better way is to send it to, or find someone that can run a beetle colony on it. You can do it yourself, but it's kinda smelly.

What I feel really makes them look nice and rustic...is to just bury it in the ground. If the ground is not frozen, 3-4 weeks and it will be completely cleaned off. If there is a small amt of "stuff" left, soak it in water and bury it again for another week or so. I run a garden hose over the spot its buried about once a week to assist in maceration.

It will end up with a pale brown, or dirty tan depending on the mineral content of your soil and as long as your antlers are under ground too, they wont fade or bleach in the sun.
When it's all said and done...blast it off with a pressure washer at the car wash...and soak it in a bucket of simple green, or rubbing alcohol to kill anything that might bring a smell. Rinse, dry and repeat if needed.

Here are two I did this summer, the cow took about 3 weeks in early summer, the deer took about 4 in late July.

Not to hijack your thread cause you got a beautiful deer there...but here is what I do with them when all the time under ground is done.
This I did for my dad for Fathers Day.

Re: First Skull Mount Buck !!

Ya very nice i like it. My dad has done a few, like you discribed above. I was trying to find a way for a whiter skull, but now it looks fake. Ill give it a shot. I have heard of the beatles before, but no one local does it. Thanks for the tips, and i like the scrimshaw work on the cattle skull.

Re: First Skull Mount Buck !!

Thanks, it's not true scrimshaw though. I believe scrimshaw only refers to a specific type of art on marine bi-products, and it's engraved and then a pigment is introduced into the small scratches.
I just give them a "once over" with a wire brush to get the loose stuff off and then draw free hand on them with a hard pencil...just something for regular art sketches.
When it's all done I give it 3-4 coats of clear matte sprayfix and send it down the line.
I should give the engraving process a try one day though, I'm always down to try new methods.

Just like the OP doesn't much like the Head/Shoulder mounts, I also don't much like the bright white skull mounts...it just seems to pretty.
I got a nice 4x4 that scored 146 when i was 22, dad got it mounted for me. From now on, anything smaller gets a European mount, anything larger can go on the wall full head/shoulder beside it.

Re: First Skull Mount Buck !!

Looks great. My brother did one by putting it under a half section of 55 gallon drum for about a year. The bugs on/in the ground cleaned it off as pretty as beetles. The half barrel keeps anything from carrying it off or chewing on the antlers...

I have a small Bison skull, I'm gonna put out soon..

Re: First Skull Mount Buck !!

peroxide and the sun will make it white as using bleach without the bones becoming brittle. Just brush it on with a paint brush or tooth brush or rag whatever you want to use to coat it and then set it in the sun for about a day and apply as needed!!
