Work has been nothing but pissing me off lately so I said screw it and took a day off today. The weather was 25 with very little wind. I had to drive through 14 inches of snow in some places while at the range but it was all worth it. After verifying dope on the 200-500 steel range I went to the LR to shoot some paper. I grouped 3 shots right at 2.5 inches at 500 so I went to 1k.

I used a program on my Palm called Balistic to chart my dope. After manipulating the velocity a little so it would match up with my findings at 500 I dialed 28.5 in up on my scope and let em fly. To my surprise they were on paper. After some minor corrections I shot three five shot groups and this was the best. A dollar covers all 5 easily and if I had a caliper with me I'm sure its right around 5.5in. Not too shabby for a newb. Lucky for me there was next to no wind, the only thing I had to contend with was the constant falling snow. Visibility was poor but not impossible.

Re: First time at 1k for 6.5 CM

You can keep that white stuff!
The high here today is in the mid 60's.
Great shooting! And a nice looking stick too!
You didn't say, but are you shooting the Hornady factory load or your own.
I have just starting shooting my 6.5 Creedmoor. The factory 140 is a very accurate loading. I have reloaded some 142 SMK with H4350 and they are shooting under 1/4 MOA.
I can imagine it took a few extra clicks on the scope to make up for the temperature.

Re: First time at 1k for 6.5 CM

Click wise I put the ambient temp in the program and it was right on. The snow was really no big deal for me, were sorta used to it.

Loads are:
LC 04 308 brass resized 3rd loading
140gr Berger LR Match .618 advertised BC seated to 3.008 COAL
41.8gr 4350 no crimp velocity is 2780

Re: First time at 1k for 6.5 CM

Thanks for the kind words. I was expecting to be flamed for shooting from the bench, and I had a tarp and my shooting mat with me, but after looking at all the facking snow I said screw it.

Re: First time at 1k for 6.5 CM

I never claimed every group was 5.5 inches thats for sure. Lol. My first group was 12in, my second group was 8in and this was the last of the day. My rifle is only 1/2 MOA when the shooter is mentally capable. sp?

I see the spot on the bench where you crapped your pants...

Nice shooting!

Re: First time at 1k for 6.5 CM

Im assuming giving the fact of all my layers the top of that seat was probably the warmest place out there, but other than that I have no idea.

Edit: since the seat is getting attention, I was hopping in the truck to paste holes every five shots so when I got up the snow covered the seat again then I sat in it, drawing all the moisture out of the bench.

And my buds wonder why I never post pics on the net...because of YOU. Just kidding, I know I should have crapped my shorts when I saw that one, I honestly was suprised just to be on paper at that range. The target was alot bigger at 12x than I expected and the vertical numbers on the target helped to line up center.

Can't wait for some snow in my area!

Re: First time at 1k for 6.5 CM

I assume this is the "Lodi" range where we are having one of our USNR Team practices in May. I doubt there are two Lodi ranges! If so, that must be one heck of a place to live! I may make the trip up for that practice, but then, I can always hit the Butner practice and its a whole lot closer! 3 hrs vs oh, say 15ish!

Very nice looking range though...very nice!

Re: First time at 1k for 6.5 CM

I gotta admit for a person who loves shooting as much as I do, having a range like this just over an hour away is a blessing. You should see this place, its like paradise. Permanent steel range from 200-500, pistol range with over 20 poppers and plates, rimfire range with 100 possible steel flip-overs and then a 100yd practice range. 320 bucks a year is a steal for such a treasure.

EDIT: if anybody ever wants to shoot this range send me a PM, I head out there at least twice a month.

Re: First time at 1k for 6.5 CM

That's too funny...the last thing I expected to see was a picture of my gun club online. But yea, good shooting! I don't know how long you've been a member, but don't worry sometimes they plow the roads out. But since you have a truck it's probably not a big deal for you.

I've been developing a load for a 6.5x47 so maybe I'll see you around.

Did you just size the lc brass or did you have to turn the necks and anneal them also? I have some Lapua brass that is sized to 6.5CM but I'm a little nervous about the thickness of the neck.

Re: First time at 1k for 6.5 CM

I posted my findings on the hide. I even went as far as to cut the case down the middle just to see. I take it slow while pressing and in smallish increments. I don't neck turn and only have to trim.

Re: First time at 1k for 6.5 CM

BRAVO ZULU mprtech!!!

Good shooting, great pictures, and a great looking range too!!!

Excellent group despite the conditions. Thanks for the little anecdote about your (Palm program called “Balistic” to chart your dope).

Yes 6.5 is the up and coming thing, why it took so long to happen is another discussion topic. But it sure makes me want to get motivated and build both a .260 Remington and 6.5x55 Swede. I got the actions,, the money, I just gotta get it done.
