I shot at the Cowtown Range (Platform 4) this morning. It was my first time getting out past 300 yards. I was shooting my .308 Scenar-L 155s with 44.1 gn of IMR 4896, which run average 2834 from my TL3 with a 26” Shilen barrel.
To start out, I read the wind for a couple minutes (like some dude says you should do and found none. The DA was really close to the table I’d printed from AB, so I just went with my prep (based on internet weather and known altitude). I was 5/5 cold bore at 660 yards using that table, and 9/10 overall. I have to shoot from a bench at my local range, so I’m still working on getting comfortable in the prone.
I spotted a target right at 998 yards from the platform (I guess it’s off the back of the range so isn’t in the official range card for platform 4) and hit it 13/30 times, but 3/5 after I took new environment readings (DA went from 1000 to 1500 while we were there), plugged everything into AB (I’d been using TRASOL) and dialed the wind instead of holding.
I found AB & Ballistic AE to be closer to my actual elevation and wind than TRASOL was.
