Gunsmithing First time build

The topic I want to discuss has probably been covered before, but I do not have time to scour all 142 pages so I apologize in advance if this is a repeat post. I am planning to build a Savage bolt gun because I am intrigued by the ease of barrel and bolt face swap. Is it possible for me to buy a long action savage and still be able to run short action rounds through it by changing the barrel and bolt face? I.e. If I buy a 300 win mag can I also build a 308 on that action? I think the answer is yes due to the military rifles being built on long action 700s, but I want to be sure before I start buying stuff. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yes, you can. Might have a problem getting the shorter rounds feeding correctly, if at all though.

Thanks for the info. I hadn't thought about the feeding problem. For my needs single shot should suffice.

It will feed fine, just make sure you push the round all the way to the back of the magazine. This will give you the room to run the heavy bullets very long in the magazine to max out the powder capacity of the 308.
