My oldest boy killed his first deer yesterday. We hunted last year and had to pass on the bucks we saw because they were not legal. This year we hunted Saturday and Sunday and saw very little so when this good size doe walked into the patch he wanted to take her. It is a legal doe so I told him to take the shot. 120 yards with the 6.5X47Lapua rifle I made for him two years ago, It is wearing a SWR Omega. He waited until she looked up straight at us and put the round right through the spine just below the base of the skull. DRT. I was really proud of the shot for him.
We ate the tenderloins on the grill a couple hours later, very tasty.

I'll bring him a hat with some better colors next time we get together!!

Doc, "Special Primitive Weapon" season starts today - antlerless deer only, for us adults, but the yutes can take anything stupid enough to walk in front of them.

Keep killing the does. MS deer are like Doritos - they'll make more.

Alabama has stumbled and likely can't recover. In fact if we get beat by Auburn I hope they take the Championship. They certainly look good enough to do it.

The special primitive weapon seasonis cool. We can shoot these tiny deer with 45-70 black powder 250 grain lead bullet. Unbelievable. I'm no bow hunter either.

Next weekend is Blue Angels homecoming airshow on Saturday but Sunday I am taking my youngest hunting after early church all day and see if he can get a kill. He drew first blood with that rifle last year on a bobcat. It will shoot minute of bobcat ass, that TSX went into the pucker and out the back.
That TSX is 130grain over RL-15 37 grains at about 2850fps. It shattered the spine of that doe. I think it is a pretty good hunting bullet.

I think you're right on Dave, He'll grow up a better hunter understanding the importance in management and the need to take does. And learning the work ethic necessary to consistently hunt and take mature bucks.

I've seen on more than one occasion a youngster get a great buck his first time out and then loose interest and desire for the sport as it came too easy!!
