Was looking into ordering another USO, Target engagment 500 to 1K.tactical type comps. Fixed power scope ok for it. anyone shooting a fixed power. Im looking at their 17x.

Re: Fixed Power for competition ?

I don't know of any using fixed in "long range tactical" comps. Alot of that is prolly due to the fact that the "tactical" crowd tends to be gear whores. Myself to a point aswell. When you shoot, what power are you on the most? Most folks that I know of don't dial up and down that much, they tend to stay in a certain range. So, pick the power you like the best on your variable now and just keep it there. Shoot with it, if it works for you...buy a fixed power. I know plenty of people that shoot fixed power scopes, (mostly the older and some of the newer weaver T series), in target benchrest comps. However, I will admit, that is a different animal.

Re: Fixed Power for competition ?

If you shoot comps you will be better served by a fixed 10 or better yet a variable. Movers and/or quick target acquisition in a large area is much more difficult at high magnification.

Re: Fixed Power for competition ?

I wouldn't recommend a fixed 17x scope for tactical comps. cuts down way to much on FOV and if mirage is boiling you won't see anything. A FFP variable powered scope is a much better option. More out there now in that same price range.

Re: Fixed Power for competition ?

I have fixed 4, 6, 10, 16 and 24 power scopes as well as 2.5-10, 3-9 and a 3-18. The 2.5-10 and 3-18 are the most all around useful of them all.

The only way I'd get a fixed is if you can't afford one of the nicer variable power scopes out there.

Re: Fixed Power for competition ?

well thats it. I have a 3.2-17 uso comming. and have a rifle in mind i want it on. I can get a fixed for hlaf that of the variable. It seems most are shooting at around 17x anyway. Im saying to order a variable, and the baby is telling me otherwise lol

if your going to spend the money for the uso you should seriously consider the s&b. I have owned numerous uso's and they are ok but to me they don't compare the to s&b.

Re: Fixed Power for competition ?

Like a penny-smart minded shooter once said here (J), they both work for tackicooool shooting (nightforce, USO, S&B, etc.) but is one scope really worth $2000 or even $3000 dollar more then something else.. That’s the comparison you’re really after, but is one really better than the other by that much of a dollar value, unless your just after saying I have a S&B hanging on my rig. I just hope that SS works out for everyone whose buying into it. Their pushing it real hard here. Makes a person wonder...

Re: Fixed Power for competition ?

I have shot just a few tactical comps, and my scope is an original 10x42 SS. Yes sometimes target acquisition is a bitch, sometimes the limited FOV is a mother... But it always tracks and it always returns to zero...

Re: Fixed Power for competition ?

My shooting partner shot a SS 10x for 2 years. The only place that the scope was a hinderance was when he was spotting for me. He has since stepped up to a 16x SS and it servers both of us well.

Re: Fixed Power for competition ?

Here's a picture of some of the gear listed for the last SH Cup for the shooters. Doesn't have everything but as you can see there are no fixed power scopes for the scopes shown in the top 20 and I would venture to guess the gear not shown will also be variable scopes. That should tell you something.

Re: Fixed Power for competition ?

nice 7 of the 16 with a optic listed are using a s&b 5-25 that by itself should tell you something.

also mad props to the 2 guys rocking 308's in the match that are in the top 20.
