I have a new Rem 700 SS receiver with about 50 rounds through it. It's a remage DIY build (McRee barrel, KRG Whiskey 3 chassis, Triggertech primary trigger). Took it out coyote hunting Saturday night, popped a coyote and it was a spinner, so racked another round in for a follow up shot and the firing pin didn't lock back (trigger was stiff, and couldn't move the safety lever). Ejected that one and same thing happened on next round, x3.. Finally locked back on 4th round and by then the yote was dead (it was a double by the way ;) )..

Just tried to replicate the malfunction and found that if I rack the bolt hard and fast that the firing pin doesn't lock back sometimes. Doesn't happen every time, maybe once in 15 cycles. Does this with no ammo, mag in or out. Doesn't seem to do it with the safety on. Rifle is plenty clean and lubed. Any ideas on the cause? Bad trigger?

Had the trigger set to about 1.75lb, upped it to over 2lb and it still did it.

It sounds like the trigger to me. The trigger might be letting the pin fall as you close the bolt. I would have to consider that you might be on the path to an AD.

Looked at the primers from the rounds I cranked out.. there is the smallest of dimples on them..

Took the trigger out and blew it out with some compressed air.. and squirted a few drops of Kroil in there.. see what happens.

With the primary when I run it as fast as I possibly can it won’t grab but at any normal operating speed I never had the issue. It has to do with the pull weight being too low was the word from trigger tech, 1.5 lb was the advertised min but it depended on the particular action as to what effective pull weight could actually be attained. But I don’t run it fast enough to break a bolt stop so it’s no issue for me and looking for the problem is the only time I’ve found it in my two years with it.

Humm, so sounds like an issue with the primary... I did jack those rounds in there pretty hard to try to get the follow up shot. At least now if it happens again I know what to look for. Just have to lightly do a half cycle to cock it and should be gtg.
