Flashlight-- around 1000 lumens

I am looking for a flashing to put in my hunting/shooting bag that will light up the world when I need it. It won't be used very often as I have pocket lights for majority of the work I do but thought a big light around 1000 lumens would be pretty handy. I have looked at the JetBeam BC40 which does 830 but only for an hour or so. I love the price and it it may be worth it to just keep some extra batteries with me if I need them. I also saw the JetBeam SSR50 (1000 lumens) which is rechargeable but didn't know if you could switch out battery packs and keep going.

The reality is if you really need 1000 lumens you will most likely need it for more than an hour or the battery will last 2 trips maybe. I have not jumped into the flashlight world because I can already tell how addicting they can be, so I am not too familiar with all the options.

So what do you think: rechargeable light or non-rechargeable light with rechargeable batteries, If so which charger and batteries do you recommend?

Also can someone give a quick break down of the different power options? I keep seeing 18650s are CR123, I am used to the CR123's, but have never heard of the the others.

Trust fire (cheap Chinese) makes a 3,400 lumen Cree light for $30ish. It seems like it's actually close to the advertised output. Surprisingly it's durable and weapons mountable. I found it on amazon. It may not last forever, but mine has lasted a year. Wish I could say the same for my g2 and 6xp.

This is what I use, its a little short on light, but great on batteries. In fact, it never runs out of power. A little bulky, but can be used as a crutch in an emergency. Annoying hobbits not included.

I'd look at the Malkoff Hound Dog with MD4 body. It doesn't quite reach that raw output level but it has an extremely well designed head/reflector for throw and will take two 3100mAh 18650 batteries (or 4 CR123A) for a great combination of small size, light weight and excellent throw. My XP-G will like up a target 300m away in the mountains, the XM-L will do more.

Plus they're made in the USA. Malkoff Devices is the company name. If you do get a light that takes 18650s, get Panasonic Protected Cell batteries from Orbtronic. Excellent batteries made in Japan.

I have used several Jetbeam lights and have been very pleased with them. I carry a BC25 with me everyday. It uses the 18650 battery pack and has worked very well. These batteries are bigger around than a CR123 and won't fit in the Surfire lights, that being said, I prefer using this light with these batteries as they are rechargable. I purchased the light 2 batteries and charger for under $100 shipped if I remember correctly. Long runtime and very bright. The SSR50 you are looking at appears to be a good deal although I don't believe you can change out the battery pack on it. I habe purchased my Jetbeams through Battery Junction. They have very good prices on most of their items, battiers, dropin upgrades and lights.

Take a look into Olight and Fenix, they are both terrific companies and have a wide variety of options (size, flood, throw, emmiter type) including different power sources. They both have there lines of monster handheld lights that push 2,000+ lumens with very respectable candela ratings.

i own lights from both companies and have been very happy with them.

* 18650 are rechargeable alternatives to the cr123. 1 18650 = 2 cr123. There are benefits to both routes. 18650 are the most common rechargeables in flashlights. There are a few with their own proprietary power packs as well.

not all flashlights that take cr123 are comparable with 18650 though.

take a look at their sites and see what options you want in the light eg. Memory system, separate power and cycle clicky, drop and water rating...
Good luck with your search-

foursevens is a company I usually go to for flashlights and its hard to beat their 10 year warranty. Can't say I've ever had to claim on it though and I've got 3 of their lights.

Here's what I recently picked up for work: Fenix TK75 LED Flashlight Package - Fenix-Store

Rechargeable 18650s, tough body, selectable output, and I will say that it will light up an area at 500yds out in the city outskirts that is fully viewable naked eye on turbo. It's really stinking bright, and I don't think you can have too much light available... Only been running it for a month, but the guys love it. Battery life is good so far, recharge every few days but we're only using intermittently. Just pick up a second set of batteries if you think you're needing a few hours of use, but on high it is quoted at 4 hours at 1100 lumens.

Did you choose this over the Fenix RC40? Why?????? The RC40 is the best LED flashlight available. Now they are selling spare batteries with charger for $70. You can't beat this light unless you go with the Polarion 50 watt which is 2k+

Cost and size. That light is another $100 on top of the TK75, and when you're buying over a dozen of them it tends to add up quick! The 75 handles everything I need to range here anyhow. I'm in the city, not BFE.
