It seems like I shoot one flier in about 99% of my groups... always low and slightly to the left. I'm a right handed shooter...

It's driving me nuts. I shot 3 groups at 300 yards, and what would have been groups between 1.7" and 1.8" were opened up to 2.5" and 2.85". It happens at 100 yards quite a bit also, but obviously isn't as pronounced. what sometimes should be a .3 to .5 inch group @ 100 will end up being .75 to .8... basically double

The best group I shot at 300 today, the "flier" was on my second shot, so I went ahead and put 5 more shots in the group (total of 7). 6 of the seven went into 1.7".... but I've got one shot F'ing up my game...

I'm not calling the flier. They are a total surprise. Shooting factory TAP ammo. Rifle is a remington LTR, mark 4 optics, seekins rings, shooting off sandbags for these groups. had spare ribs today for lunch with a dr. pepper.

any ideas? at least whenever I throw one off, I'm consistant with it... low and to the left.

Re: Fliers....

A spare rib for lunch and a dr pepper... that alone is suspect. Did you include this nugget as a potential cause for your "fliers" ?

Sounds like a trigger issue, possibly a bit of shoulder, grip could be off, sympathetic squeeze...

I would recommend reflecting inward and not outward.

Re: Fliers....

just trying to fill in all the blanks...the ribs + Dr. Pepper was just reminding me, my fat ass will be going on a diet in the new year...

I think the trigger does need some work, it's a little heavier than I would like... probably around 4.5 lbs.

Here's a shot of two of the groups. hell if I know... maybe they're not really fliers, and that's just part of the group. THe top group is 7 shots, the bottom group is 6 shots. I shot 7 at the top group because I thought I fudged that 2nd shot. the bottom group has 6 shots because I had 6 rounds left in the box...

Re: Fliers....

+1 on what Lowlight said. Check your fundamentals, alignment , trigger pull are they consistent with all shots? If all that is consistent, is it mental? Do you know if the flier is coming at the same point every time i.e 4th shot, 5th shot.

I know a couple of folks, myself included (back in the brief period when I thought a tight group meant something) that would see a tight group forming after 4 shots or so, get excited and totally botch the 5th because they/I were so concerned with making the 5th shot rather than sticking with what made the first 4.

Re: Fliers....

one other thing I need to do is take only this rifle to the range. today I was checking zero on my 7 mag for a hunting trip next week, and that thing kicks like a bastard compared to this. Also had an AR I was killing time letting the barrel cool down on the 308 between groups.
maybe going back and forth between rifles is wrecking some consistancy as well.

The top group the "flier" was the second shot.

the bottom group, I'm not sure... I didn't want to look at the group until I was done, and through the scope, I couldn't see the holes very well.

I don't think Lowlight meant an issue with the trigger itself but with the way the trigger is being run. Just maybe.

I know... but a better trigger would make my job easier. obviously more trigger time is better, unless I'm working myself into bad habits that will be that much harder to break down the road.

Re: Fliers....

I had this same issue some time back,1 flyer low and to the left always 3rd shot for me.I had a friend watching me shoot he got to noticeing that after every shot after cycling the bolt my finger got deeper into the trigger untill on the 3rd shot i was squezzing off the first knuckle joint instead of the pad..He told me what i was doing and after that i started making sure my first finger pad was the only thing touching the trigger....problem solved...My thing was concetrating so hard on sight picture breathing, rifle snugged in just right, etc.i was forgetting about proper finger placement......Just my .02

Re: Fliers....

With the busy holidays, I have not taken the time to dry fire. I went out Saturday and it really showed. I suggest you do what I'm going to do...get back to the boring task of dry fire.

I don't know, I got married about 10 years ago and haven't dry fired very much since. But I don't remember it being boring. Wait.... what are we talking about here? Oh, sorry, nevermind....

Re: Fliers....

good tip on the finger position...

strangely enough, I just came across lowlight's video on finger position on semi autos... I would imagine the same principal holds true regardless of action type. definitely something to pay attention to next time.

Re: Fliers....

The online lessons on here are excellent. The trigger lesson alone would be worth the price of admission.

I had an unfortunate experience lately where I blew out a tendon on my left little finger, last joint. This created a condition known as mallet finger. Had this occurred on my right index finger (second to last joint), it would have caused almost perfect trigger finger alignment as taught on this site.

However, I will attempt to achieve perfect repeated trigger finger alignment through practice rather than recreating a sports injury on my index finger. Sorry for the weird posts tonight, sleep deprived. Have a good night.

almost every time I shoot a group with the first 4 shots touching I blow it on the 5th shot!!
