Gunsmithing Fluting........

Re: Fluting........

I'm not sure, but I think that the stock 5R barrel may not be cut rifled -- which iirc means fluting now (after contouring) could be bad (I'm not sure if there's extra stress-relieving stuff they can do at this point or not)..

I'm sure somebody else will jump in and clarify.

Re: Fluting........

There is great debate over this. The factory Rem. barrels are button rifled. Much safer with cut rifled barrels. While it might be fine, it might not. Your decision. Several well respected smiths don't reccomend it and won't do it.

Re: Fluting........

Just my person feeling, but I would only have a barrel fluted if it was done by the barrel's maker, when it was being made. I have 2 fluted barrels - both are Kriegers, fluted by Krieger and they were ordered that way. The only tangible benefit is the weight reduction from the original contour, unfluted. IF they cool quicker, it's not enough to notice in the field in real use. Yes, they really look cool, but when they're shot out I will not be spending the money to have their replacements fluted.

Re: Fluting........

Remingtom barrels are hammer forged. They wet grind their wide flat bottom flutes. As far as fluting your barrel, DON"T Too great a risk with not much on the reward side.
Any top tier cut or buttoned barrel can be fluted without any problems. Been doing my own fluting for 18 years. Not a single complaint traced back to fluting.

I agree, don't do it.

Re: Fluting........

How old is your 5r? Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the early 5r come with Mike Rock custom barrels? I'm no where near sure about this.

Negative.
