FN SPR .308 or Remington SPS varmint or Savage 10

I have been looking around for a new rifle and I have posted on here that I wanted a savage 10 fcp or an SPS varmint, since I could not afford the 5r that I was after.

I have a guy that has a FN SPR patrol with a 24" barrel thats fluted, with the factory Hogue stock that is new in box, never fired, never had any optics mounted, nothing. It has what looks like a 20 moa base, but I do not know, he said it was on there when he bought it. He is trading me it for one of my pistols so it will be cheaper than an sps varmint and definantly the savage!

Is this a good rifle for an entry long range rifle? What about upgrades for later? The action is supposed to be based off a pre-64 winchester action and I know those are good, but what do yall think overall about the rifle? Is the accuracy gonna be decent, Im pretty sure it will shoot better than I will
!
Any help would be great,

if its the same stock that's on the sps tactical you will have to change it out if your going to be shooting with a bi pod bc it well contact your barrel ...i liked the hogue stock other then that.... i don't know how well they gun will shoot bc i have never had one,and i cant say that ive seen a lot of after market parts for it either but that could be bc i haven't really looked for any, but it doesn't sound like a bad deal u might wont to ask why hes wanting to get rid of it so bad ..but more then likely they stocks going to have to go just my two cents

There is an SPR, and there is a PBR. It sounds like you're talking about the PBR. I believe the Hogue stock comes in two versions: with and without an aluminum bedding block. And a version of the Hogue stock comes on the PBRs, whilst the SPRs come with an A series McMillan stock.

If it is an SPR in a Hogue stock, then the seller most likely bought it as a barrelled action and separate stock and put it together himself (From CDNN). It also means he has a grand total of about $700-800 invested in it.

the stock doesent have the aluminum bedding block it just has the pillars, I guess I will look around some more for part, since the action is based off the winchester I should be able to find stocks and other gear that will wor for it.

My FN SPR is a tack driver; I'd put it at the top of the list. I'd jump on that action.

If I recall correctly only the FN A3G and FH A5M in the SPR line were available with 24" fluted bbls. They also left the factory with Mc Millan stocks. The action will be roll marked "special police rilfe"

The factory PBR or patrol bolt rifles came with Hogue stocks that have the <span style="text-decoration: underline">full aluminum bedding block </span> not the pillars. In the PBR line only the XP version(controled round feed) was available with 24" fluted bbl.

So with that I would venture to say that this rifle was made from parts.


I have the Sav 10FP, Rem 700SPSV and FNH SPR A1 and they are all great shooting rifles when fed and driven properly.

He did not make the gun from parts, he showed me the box and all the paper work, I will check to see if the gun does have the full bedding block.

I mean for 400 hundred dollars, would yall not pick it up?
Thats the grand total I have invested in this pistol.

the action is a winchester action, that what it said from FN and the paper work in the box. The gun IS about two years old the receipt said so maybe that is why it doesnt have the McMillan.

If you like the Model 70 then the FN, be it SPR or PBR, will be good for you. I don't like the DBM because it looks funny but hey that's me. I never function tested it. The SPRs are supposed to have chrome lined barrels so if you getting half MOA or even 3/4 MOA your barrel will likely last 30,000 rounds with being able to cut it back. That 30,000 rounds would also depend on how well the lands wear or don't. But if the lands aren't wearing fast and just the throat is then you could quite possibly have a rifle that will last a lot longer than anyone elses, giving you the opportunity to fine tune what you want in a rifle. I know that M4s can have 100,000 rounds through them and still retain their minute if bad guy accuracy, that's with a chrome lining.

To confirm with posts above, the SPR does NOT come outfitted in a Hogue stock. The newer models come in McM stocks; the older ones with HS Precision stocks. The newer models should have a Near Mfg 20 MOA base (one of the best out there IMO) and the older versions have a Badger 20 MOA base. However, there are some newer versions that made it out of the factory with the Badger base (like mine). Confirm that the rifle you are looking at is indeed an SPR, not a PBR.

I have had a 24" Rem700 and replaced it with the 20" SPR A1a. Both shoot great, but I am partial towards the SPR because of the standard McM A3 stock, the 20" heavy barrel, and the bolt. I replaced the factory DBM with CDI bottom metal and AICS mags bc the factory FN system is quite lackluster in functionality; lots of misfeeds and they are a bitch to snap in. You could get a Rem700 LTR or XCR compact tactical and add a new stock, base and DBM to it, but I was more happy with the SPR setup out of the box. I love my FN, and I don't regret my decision to replace my 700. Both of them are great rifles, and I don't think you will regret whichever decision you make, provided the rifle in question is an SPR.

yes folks yall are right and I am wrong, it is a pbr xp, with a 24" barrel.

I will post pics as soon as my camera is charged, I mounted my 10x scope on the gun, havent got to shoot it yet but hopefully will make it to the range over the holidays. The stock will do until I can get a McMillan A3 adjustable.
