I own a FN SPR 24" A1 and am just getting into longer range shooting. I was looking at the Bottom Metal conversion from CDI and wondering how difficult the installation is on the FN. Was also hoping to hear from someone that done this mod to get some feedback.

Also like to know other mods that made a difference on their FN....bedding, trigger, etc.....

Not a reloader so some info on what it likes to eat would help too!

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Re: FN SPR and CDI Bottom Metal

You need to mod the stock if the stock is a floor plate model and you will need to machine the receiver to get the mag to fit. Not hard if you have the tools and know what you are doing but this is not a Dremal job.

Re: FN SPR and CDI Bottom Metal

My advice is send it to Jeff at CDI to do a full install and bed it at the same time . The triggers are easy to adjust if you aren't looking for a super light trigger , if you are, have him do a trigger job for you . He does excellent work and is a nice guy . They use Fed 168 GM match ammo to shoot the test targets . Mine would shoot around .7 with the Fed 168 and .65 with Lapua 170 Lockbase ammo . Those are the only factory loads I've tried .

Re: FN SPR and CDI Bottom Metal

I bought mine (A1) used here on the Hide a couple of years ago. I don't know who did the bedding job, but I was pretty impressed with the work. I don't have the CDI bottom metal installed, yet. But my action was bedded like the one seen here

Couldn't say how big of a difference it made, but it shoots pretty good for me. I've only shot reloads. The 168 and 175 smk's both shot around one moa. My best groups to date have been with 155 Lapua's.

Re: FN SPR and CDI Bottom Metal

.Dude..let Jeff do it... I sent mine 2 him and had it back within 2 weeks of the day I sent it to him. Work is top notch and he is good to deal with! The bedding made the rifle shoot even better (as it should).
Randy is right about inletting the action. Not a dremel job..

Money well spent.

Re: FN SPR and CDI Bottom Metal

Jeff did my A5 and the look, fit, and function is perfect-not to mention quick turnaround. As for ammo, she really likes 118LR but I've yet to shoot a quality factory load that the FN didn't keep under 1.5MOA.

Best advice I got as a new guy getting into long range shooting-shoot, shoot, shoot. Spend your money on ammo and training, not gimmicks. The gimmicks won't help if you don't have the basics of marksmanship down pat, can't read the wind, and can't judge distances.

Re: FN SPR and CDI Bottom Metal

Took the SPR to the range today and shot well under MOA with factory ammo. I am amazed at this rifle!!! Rang steel at 300, 400, and the end of the range at 500. I had numerous hits on a less than head sized target at 500 yards.

200 yard clover leaf groups with all rounds touching. Seems like it would be hard to improve on this rifle but I may send it to jeff at CDI for some work. I am in love.
