A question for those of you who have had customs built off of SPR actions or for the smiths who have experience with these actions. These actions are supposed to be trued by FN. When measured do they need work or are they within specs?
Thanks LB. With comments regarding various custom actions, I'm interested to see how consistent the SPR actions are. In a recent thread, the OP was asking about factory SPR actions which apparently are no longer available. The actions that CDNN had still pop up occasionally. If they are not consistently true, there is merit in the idea of buying a PBR as a donor. More info?
I had Dave Sink out of Lexington, NC build me a 260 on FN SPR action from CDNN. He trued it up and used a Benchmark barrel and Mcm HTG stock. Shoots holes touching at 100 which is far as I've had the chance to shoot it. Wish I had bought more than one when they were available.
KM, did your smith indicate how far out of spec the action was? I know he probably didn't give you any numbers but did he give you something subjective like a lot or a little?
I didn't get back into accurate rifles until 2010. That said, I knew the general market and a good buy on a pre-64 donor was $450.00. I can't believe I let those CDNN actions evaporate. I've found one since at what felt like a good buy. Doubt I'll find another without paying blood. That's part of the reason for the post. If the truing is consistent it adds to the value.
My build was several years ago but I do remember that it wasn't any worse or better than the other mass produced actions. I picked my action up for 375.00, complete with steel floor plate. Wish I had bought 2 or 3 more.......
