Gunsmithing FN/W70 action and mod to take AI mags?

Good morning, I was curious as to what is actually done to the FN/W70 action to accept DBM that utilizes AI mags?
Once done, can it be put back into it's original configuration with the factory parts?
Pics are nice if you have them-

Wow! I emailed SAC and will wait for his reply before I even consider it. It's a future project that may not ever happen after reading the Dixon thread.

Hold on for just a minute.
First let me say I have the utmost respect for Chad Dixon, his knowledge and ability. He has valid points in the thread shown.
There are a LOT of CDI haters in the internet world.
But Jeff builds a good product that serves a purpose and Many, Many customers have used his DBM with great success and very little in the way of issues when properly install. Which proper installation plays a huge roll in the performance.
I have a CDI system installed on my Win Mod 70SA, it has been shot alot, with NO issues and I am not gentle on my equipment!

It's your call but I would not hesitate to do it the same all over again. Jeff inletted my stock and GAP machined the receiver. 100% satisfied and trouble free!

Why would CDI have a bunch of detractors? Honestly, I had no idea.

Chads thread has nothing to do with short action fn's as you are not removing feed ramp/lug abutment.The only material removed is from the sides of the receiver to clear the width of the magazine.It's a very minimal process.

FN should be releasing their new TBM "Tactical Box Magazine" bottom metal shortly. Its full of much needed improvement over the last OEM magazine system.

The new TBM will have its own OEM drop in bottom metal which will be similar in size to the current design. This will allow it to be a true drop in fit into existing McMillan DBM SPR's. It has a nice aggressive ambidextrous mag release system that operates smoothly.

Furthermore this new system uses a new mag design that will be proprietary to FN.

5 and 10 round magazines avaialbe at Midwayusa.com

These mags are well made, have an updated spring, an internal length of 2.900" and are almost half the price of an AI magazine. These magazines are easy to tune to get oddball calibers like .22-250 to feed properly out of also.

The TBM should be available shortly and will be only a few dollars more than a standard bottom metal system, but it will come with two magazines.

This is great for FN SPR owners because you no longer have to modify the stock and action in order to get a good mag system to run properly.

That still leaves us long action fans with only one option for a mag fed Model 70. I am thankful that the rifle is living on in the FN SPR guise but it is only in short action form.

That's good news, I would rather do this than mod the action. I wonder if the news mags will work with the Eberlestock chassis? States in video that it uses FN magazine, believe it refers to current, but the new one should be ok I wonder?

The AI mags are top notch and if you want to run the what is likely the best magazine made then it's a very simple mod to make to your action. If this does not feel right there are other options available.

(I opened up my FN SPR for the AI mags / CDI metal)

Does the Eberlestock Chassis actually exist? Last I heard the project was shelved.

As I understand, it uses the same inlet. Manners does offer that option and I'm certain a gunsmith could open one up to accept it.

I have been hearing that for three years, without a definite release date, more talk. My FNH just came back from CDI. Jeff did a great job, really enjoy shooting this rifle...now.

GAP did my action mod for the CDI DBM. No problems removing a little metal from the bottom of the action.

if you look at the instructions provided by CDI there is such small amount of steel you remove as to be inconsequential. I have put on many of these following those instructions and never had a problem, plus feeding is greatly improved with this system.

I am in the process of fitting one of these CDIs in my McM A4, for an FN SPR. Maybe one of y'all can help out:

1. I measured my stock, which is inletted for FNs DBM, to determine a baseline pillar length. I subtracted .100" from that to account for the raised bosses around the screwholes on the bottom metal. I cut some 1/4" tubing to length to mock up the metal/action fit.

Question: is the magwell of the bottom metal supposed to be parallel to the receiver? Seems like it.

If so, I dont understand whats going on with the front action screw, because, it isn't perpendicular to the receiver, when the magwell is parallel. It seems like the forward action screwhole should NOT be square/true to the bottom face of the bottom metal, but it is.

I would put the bottom metal on the action with mag & pillars installed and test cycle it. My action and bottom metal appear parallel to each other and even with the stock lines. Mine was a factory DBM stock I milled out to accept the CDI metal.

Why is there a bit more than "a small amount" on the links on page one? That looks to be a lot to me. </div></div>



Maybe that's the one someone cut into the feed ramp or notched it for longer bullet clearance. The CDI on FN is a very minor milling job with minimal steel being removed.

I agree with whomever said its not a good idea to start chewing out your feed ramp or notching a lot of material out.

The CDI instructions show exactly where and how much metal to mill. The post with the pics above show a feed ramp that looks like a beaver chewed on it. I think I still have pics of the last one I did. Will post when I find them

Essentially, the sidewalls of the magwell of the receiver get thicker from back to front, and need to be made the same thickness from back to front.
