New to the Long Range World. Fresh out the Army, was a Tanker for almost 8 years. Grew up hunting the Dense forests of Northern PA. Now the Gov. sends me some screw around money each month, so I’d like to use that towards learning long range shooting/ hunting as well as want to get a custom rifle built for my western and northern trips. Interested in the skill for my overall preparedness too. I’m wondering what companies you gentlemen have had good success with for various builds as well as any overall tips be that glass, calibers, what have you. Currently I own a .300 Wby backcountry and a 20 year old Savage 25-06. Both suit my needs currently be that East or west, however I want to have built a real long range rig. Currently the skill is not there I’m alright for a tanker out to 300 maybe a little past without bipod just off my ruck, but I’m excited to dive in to learning this new discipline. Any tips and recommendations I’d soak up like a sponge.

Builder wise, I really enjoy working with Tim "Moon" Roberts at Crescent Customs. Glass, get the best you can afford! It is really difficult to beat the 6.5 Creedmoor, it is my go to hunting and long range caliber. A 22lr trainer is also a great and fun way to improve shooting skills. Also the Hide is a great place for info or questions!

Regularly I’ll have to get back to you on that one I just moved home and know of a couple places I could probably get out to 700 maybe.

main purpose of the rifle will be long range mountain hunting, however I’d like to ease my way into PRS but with my hunting rig, I don’t really want 2 rifles. Mainly hunting and recreational long range.

How often to carry, I’d say a lot, I enjoy carrying my rifles for miles on end and like deep backcountry hiking into hunting. Weight isn’t too much concern as the Army kind of broke me in to carrying heavy things. However if I can get it sub 10lbs then cool for sure.

Total budget I’m getting about 1600 a month from government on top of beginning a new career at a federal prison, so more than likely roughly a grand a month I could save towards this.

Ive been researching hard a few days, really like the idea of the foldable chassis, I understand it’ll weigh more than a stock per say. I’ve carried Army weapons for years and the chassis seems like something that I’d be into over all of my other rifles that I’ve ever had being traditional synthetic stock.

I already have a lighter weight .300 Wby that serves the purpose as my do everything backpacking powerful go to rifle for out to 300, however I want a longer barreled true long range rig that I can practice with out to some distance as I get accustomed to each distance. Also there will be some marksman career opportunities in the next few years that I want to be ready to fill.

when I say get into PRS, just dabble in, I’m not trying to compete in a ton of circuits right out the gate maybe once a year a local one or something of that nature
